ELCA Pastor Uses Daily Devotionals to Decry Iraq War
Individual Emails ^ | March 2006 | Pastor Kerry

Posted on 03/09/2006 6:17:09 AM PST by American72

My husband has subscribed to a Daily Devotional Email from a Pastor Kerry at Covenant Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Houston, TX for a number of years. Although we are Missouri Synod, we know Pastor Kerry and have enjoyed the devotionals. Kerry recently went on a 6-month sabbatical doing who knows what and came back talking all this anti-war garbage. We were present at his Christmas Eve Service with the family (my husband's sister goes there) and almost got up and left when he started talking about our bombs killing innocents on Christmas Eve. My husband has already written him twice after his emails this week with no reply. Look at the website and read the devotionals from this week. Here are a few excerpts. I would post them all but it would be very long.

"Increasingly I am coming to believe that the best support, both now and in the long run, in the face of messages that say the quagmire in the Middle East will last for years, is to bring them home."

"Let us pray: Gracious God, the battles against evil rage in our hearts and in this world. Patience and love fall to power and weaponry. Our brother is dehumanized and our children are taught to kill with precision. Bombs are strapped to bodies and statesmen abuse the trust of their people and the power of their offices. Is there anything we can do or must we sit idly by? In Jesus’ name. Amen."

"I realize that I am not a philosopher or a theologian or an expert at anything, I’m nothing but a simple parish pastor. And I seriously question whether what we are doing in Iraq continues to be just and right or whether it has become something we are just doing because we have the might."

"Perhaps we haven’t learned much in the last 4000 years. But hopefully we have learned something. Hopefully we have learned that wars don’t solve problems. At best, war can create the opportunity whereby problems can be solved. I pray that is the outcome in Iraq and I pray that it happens as quickly as possible."

"Let us pray: Dear Jesus, just as people misconstrued the message of the Bible when they used it to convict you of blasphemy, so too people today use the Bible to justify their prejudices, fears and idolatries. Help us to truly and deeply see beyond the words on the page to the Word which your Spirit sows anew in our lives. In Jesus’ name. Amen."

I hear you. Like I said earlier, this is the first week his devotionals sounded like this. I've been interested to receive them each day to see how he progresses each day in his rant. You can be assured we will be unsubscribing - my husband is not shy and he will send him an email specifically stating why.

Oh, did you make the error in thinking that I was stating that all of these were wins? Your mistake, then. I was listing them as engagements, otherwise known as wars. The duration, success, or finality of any engagment on this list does not change the fact that it was a war.

What rebel grou was the CIA involved with during all that? What was that about wars 'ending' things?

Don't try to shift the focus, which was how we defeated Communism. We both realize that you've lost this point and changing the topic won't change that.

Really? Which ones were classified by international law as 'war'? That's right, none of them. Police actions and therefore skirmishes in a larger 'war'.

Don't try to shift the focus, which was how we defeated Communism.

My point is proven. In 'defeating' communism in Afghanistan, which defeated itself in fact, the next problem was created. War doesn't solve anything, it just creates more problems for the next generation.

Which, if you can wait 10-25 years, you'll see in the creation of the Persian superstate. As all secular forms of government are now out of the way, the next step will be an eventual unification between Iraq and Iran.

I would suggest Jim Powell's book Wilson's War : How Woodrow Wilson's Great Blunder Led to Hitler, Lenin, Stalin, and World War II. Pretty easy read and quite informative. His other book, FDR's Folly : How Roosevelt and His New Deal Prolonged the Great Depression, is also highly praised by conservatives

Only if you are willing to surrender your intellectual honesty can you consider your point being proven by changing the topic, as you have attempted to do yet again. The current scourge that is Islam was not created by the defeat of Communism, it has been working its bloody work for over a 1000 years. Don't you know anything about history?

But thank you for admitting that it was indeed a war and that Communism was defeated there. It was the first honest thing you've posted today.

Look I realize you're having problems connecting the dots but I have never changed the point. The point is that every war creates a vacuum for the next, already existing evil, to rise in its place.

The current scourge that is Islam was not created by the defeat of Communism, it has been working its bloody work for over a 1000 years. Don't you know anything about history?

Ah, a holy war sort of guy. Here's a hint. That war will never be won on this world. As to your 'current scourge' statement, I think a good portion of folks realize Islam has been around for some time. However, the rest of the world outside the ME has two choices.

A) Continue a failed policy of westernization of ME nations that has been tried over and over with the same result (anger at the West, attacks of some level on the West) or
B) leave them to themselves, a policy that has not been followed in over two centuries.

You keep sticking your face into a bees' nest hoping for a different result, you're not only stupid, you're just going to keep getting stung.

Dittos from my husband and me. I was raised in the church that was the former ALC. They went over to the dark side through the mergers.

I, too, couldn't take the socialism in The Lutheran

We've been happily Missouri Synod Lutherans for 13 years now.

I just wanted to throw this out here to see what everyone thought about it.

I think while he was on sabbatical he had a fling with Bianca Jagger and he's still trying to keep the flame alive.
