As the war in Iraq grinds into its fourth year, a growing proportion of Americans are expressing unfavorable views of Islam, and a majority now say that Muslims are disproportionately prone to violence, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
The poll found that nearly half of Americans -- 46 percent -- have a negative view of Islam, seven percentage points higher than in the tense months after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, when Muslims were often targeted for violence.
Conservative and liberal experts said Americans' attitudes about Islam are fueled in part by political statements and media reports that focus almost solely on the actions of Muslim extremists.
According to the poll, the proportion of Americans who believe that Islam helps to stoke violence against non-Muslims has more than doubled since the attacks, from 14 percent in January 2002 to 33 percent today.

Again, the media thinks history began in the year 2000. It's not as if the muslims were put in internment camps, like the democrats put japanese in, during WW II...

"It's not as if the muslims were put in internment camps, like the democrats put japanese in, during WW II..."

The only thing to do, then, is to give those thinking Americans frontal lobotomies and send them to reeducation camps so that the polls can line up with Arab propaganda.

I'm no religious scholar, but as near as I can tell, there's no redemption in Islam, just submission. Of the men to Allah, and of the women to the men. No thanks.

Lets see; according to Islam, their "leader" Mohammed, and the Koran. Everyone who does not believe in Islam, their false prophet Mohammed, or "allah" aka, Satan is an "infidel". And according to Islam, their "leader" Mohammed, and the Koran, all us "infidels" just get one of THREE choices:
1) Convert to Islam by force or choice.
2) Become the slave of Islamic masters, subject to sahria "law". If you don't like these first two choices, Islam only offers one more choice:
3) You can die for your faith or lack thereof.
"...and a majority now say that Muslims are disproportionately prone to violence."
I guess you could say that. The reality is this: we are educating ourselves on the TRUE violent, ruthless nature of Islam and recognize it for what it is; a violent death/subjugation cult that wants to conquer the world in the name of or "allah" aka, Satan. In which ALL of it's followers are taught in their so-called "holy" writings that they are to lie to all us "infidels" and deceive us and "play nice" until they get the upper hand and can convert, enslave or kill us.
The problem for Islam is this: America is a free country and most Americans are not ignorant, we can read/study this death/subjugation cult for ourselves and come to our own conclusions without some imam mouthpiece from CAIR trying to pull the wool over our eyes, and their line: "Who you gonna trust? Us or your lying eyes?"
This ploy does not cut it because we can clearly see what is taking place throughout the world; EVERYWHERE that this death/subjugation cult has gained a foothold or the upper hand.

In an Arab world where torture, beheadings and the cutting off of hands are considered normal sanctions not just for real felonies but also for "heresy" and other thought crimes, what on earth must Mr. Gore's listeners have imagined he meant by "terrible abuses"?I wish I could remember which FReeper said that first...

"What! Only 46% have a negative view of Islam? I am dissappointed. I feel it should be much higher."
Give it time; these numbers are going to continue climbing dramatically becaise every day is another day of violence, death and mayhem for Islam, the so-called "religion of peace".

It is to be deeply regretted that 54% are too dense.

This sounds like spin added by the author. Is it "almost solely" "extremists" or is it based upon the rank and file muslims who are rioting all over the world over something as stupid as cartoons?

It doesn't speak too well of the American population that it has taken 25 years for them to start getting a clue.
