A young woman was killed and 16 passengers were hospitalized when a van packed with suspected illegal immigrants rolled over on a rural road Wednesday, authorities said.
Mario Olguin of Vista was arrested and will be charged with felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter, the California Highway Patrol said. Authorities identified Olguin, 20, as the driver of the 1988 Ford Econoline van, which was carrying 18 suspected illegal immigrants.
The dead woman, 21 years old, was not identified.
The van was traveling at an "unsafe speed" in the predawn darkness when Olguin lost control, the CHP said. The van rolled over a barbed-wire fence before it came to rest upright in a field across from the Hollenbeck Canyon Wildlife Area, east of San Diego.
The van wasn't being pursued, said CHP Officer Brian Pennings.
One of the injured was a 5-year-old girl.
Prayers for those injured and their families.
Pings..
Grrrr ...
is this happening more often or are we just hearing about more often? so sad!
In Jesus's Name, Amen.
The sheer volume alone of illegal traffic would make folks shake their heads.
This is a weekly occurrence and becoming more like a daily one across the border states region, or so it seems.
I hope they have a good HMO...
They do... its us taxpayers.
Sad. :(
I'm surprised that we don't have people complaining that we should provide Greyhound Bus tickets to these people to prevent them from dying in car accidents. They put water in the desert for them.
i know it has been a problem for a long time, but was just wondering if it seems worse because the media is covering it more, or if it really is worse?
oops sorry! just saw your answer. :-/ i'll shut up now. lol
It likely does receive more coverage than it used to when events like this occur... but they has always been covered to some degree.
There have been a few more memorable incidents the last few years so the media is not reluctant to cover them, but they do occasionally step in it in their coverage.
This article uses illegal along with the word immigrants which is rather unusual, tho.
This is the third serious crash caused by vans full of illegals in one month here in San Diego.
ping
They probably paid their life savings to the shyster creep who got them across the border. I don't have a problem bringing them back to health.
The problem I have is after the health, will we bring them back to the border?
