Iraqi Counter Terrorism Force frees hostage

BALAD, Iraq (Army News Service, March 8, 2006) – A late-night operation by Iraqi Counter Terrorism Forces east of Taji March 6 freed an Iraqi government official held hostage and led to the detention of two suspects believed to be involved in the hostage taking.

Soldiers from the 2nd Counterterrorism Battalion, 1st Iraqi Special Operations Forces Brigade planned and conducted an assault that freed the Iraqi official who, according to sources, was to be executed later that night after spending almost four days in captivity.

The hostage was handcuffed to a bed in an isolated room of the house in which he was held. He was badly beaten and bleeding from his mouth when he was discovered by the Iraqi Counter Terrorism Force known as ICTF. However, he was quickly cut free and taken to another room where he received medical attention and was able to call his family to tell them that he was safe.

According to one senior U.S. Special Operations Forces advisor responsible for training the ICTF, this is the type of mission they train for.

“They were able to execute quickly and make timely decisions on the ground,” the advisor said. “It provided an outstanding situation in which to showcase the abilities of the unit.”

Two individuals were apprehended soon after ICTF forces discovered the hostage. The two are believed to be part of a kidnapping and execution cell.

No one was killed during this operation, officials said. They said one of the alleged kidnappers received a cut on his head. He was treated on the scene.

U.S. SOF elements are involved throughout Iraq in training and advising the Iraqi Special Operations Forces Brigade, as well as other Iraqi Security Forces, including army and police units.

Love the sound of that. They are finally taking ownership of their own country (away from Saddam & his flunkies). Freedom is starting to catch on, even though there is (always) a price.

Because the MSM doesn't want to tell you about it? Actually, these guys are being executed on a pretty regular basis.

Iraqi call. The Iraqis consider these kidnapers, murderers etc. straight-out criminals. They try them and imprison or execute them under the provisions of Iraqi law.

The Coalition Provisional Authority under Ambassador Bremer suspended the Iraqi death penalty. Bremer wanted a clean break from the arbitrary DP as it was used under Saddam.

When the Iraqis got authority back, they reinstated it for these guys, due to popular demand. Much to the chagrin of Saddam and his henchmen... imagine them trying to get their evil skulls to wrap around the idea of "popular demand" or "public opnion." In the old days, if Saddam wanted the public to have an opinion he gave it to them. Now they get to give it to him.

Excellent. And kudos to our guys for being such efficient and effective teachers.

"Actually, these guys are being executed on a pretty regular basis."

I did not know that. Since they are kidnappers, I don't care how fair the trial was.

Yes, I am presuming there was a trial. Like I said, I don't care.

We have to find out who else is involved. Also it will make the existing kidnappers extremely paranoid that their cover is blown. I love it they can run, but they cannot hide..

Yes, they are actually having trials with defense lawyers, evidence, and a panel of judges. They pulled up their old court system (established by the British) and have been functioning under that. It's slow, very slow, but they have been meticulous at observing the rules to the point of releasing people if they do not have actual evidence. Painful as that sounds to us, it's very promising for Iraq. Especially after the 5 minute "trials" that were held under Saddam with execution orders issued with NO evidence even submitted.

Right on time, 13 of them were hanged Thursday:

They might be an oil-rich country but they know how to save energy.

After all, they have to look pretty for the hangman's noose.
