PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Gov. Janet Napolitano said Wednesday that she signed an executive order to expand the Arizona National Guard's presence at the state's porous border with Mexico to support federal efforts to combat undocumented immigration and other border problems.
The governor also said she would veto a bill in the Legislature requiring her to send troops to the border, but wants lawmakers to pass a proposal to pay for the expanded National Guard role.
She said the Legislature's pending bill requiring additional deployment as a result of her declaration last summer of an immigration emergency in four border counties appeared to be an attempt by critics to score political points at her expense.

Alsolutely quite right, O. They're all going to start piling-on, now. W&Co gave away the *security issue* and the sheeple will vote accordingly.
This whole things really hacks me off. I think I'll take my 1911 .45cal ACP out and do some target practice, to cool down.
"Presides over a state with one of the highest crime rates.................."
Care to elaborate? Petty theft, robbery, auto theft, assaults, murder?
ALL are up in this state
"WHY hasn't the great hero McCain spoken out in defense of Arizonans?"
Oh, he has...(not sure you would call it defense of)

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is teaming with top labor unions, other business interests and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in support of a guest worker program and legal way for undocumented workers already in the U.S. to stay in the country.
Joining the U.S. Chamber in favor a proposal put forward by McCain, Flake, Kolbe and U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) are the Service Employees International Union, the Laborers International Union, the American, bishops group and the American Health Care Association. The Arizona state chamber also backs that guest worker effort.
I read an e-mail from NumbersUSA that basically says that DHS cannot keep up with the numbers of immigrants being processed, and that some DHS employees have not undergone the background checks required to be able to screen the immigrants. Why DHS hasn't done the background checks is beyond me. Lack of funds? Sheer laziness? Simple incompetence?
NumbersUSA could be wrong about this, of course, but I would still take anything from this administration with a grain of salt.
If you cherish your job, and those of fellow Freepers, you will oppose these slimy, take-jobs-from-Americans guestworker proposals.
Which McCain are you referring to?
The Maverik, the Republican Renegade? or the potential DEMOCRATIC Advise president. - LOL :)
"This is the same troll governor that
1. Fought against Prop. 200.
2. Would not enforce Prop. 200 until forced to.
3. Still is against the wall at the border.
4. Vetoed the same English-learners bill she approved of before (because the legislature wanted checks on how the money was spent)"
So she has high credibility. lol
Napolitano will be followed by other ingenuous democrats and the Mexicans and OTM's (other than Mexicans.)
A signature from her or any other single Governor, is like dropping a stone in the Mississippi. Great photo op but useless in real life!!
Not to worry TSR! I oppose more than I support these days. ;*)
I just try to post links with little to no commentary.
Napolitano = smoke and mirrors
Once the funding is approved, the troops will monitor crossing points, assist with cargo inspection and operate surveillance cameras, according to the order.
About 170 National Guardsmen are already posted at the nation's busiest illegal entry point, where they assist with communications, fence construction and anti-drug efforts.
So how many friggin' troops?
Article further states, "an unspecified number ... to help federal agents."
What if the Federal Agents are ordered to tell the AZ National Guard (which may happen), "No thank you, we don't need your help." ???
Because he is too busy speaking out in defense of illegal aliens.
I couldn't believe the positive spin this story was getting, makinge HER look like the hero. I live in AZ. She announced in here State of the State address this year she would send troops only if the federal government paid for them.
The Republican legislature said, hey we have a budget surplus here, why not use THAT $$ to pay for the troops if you think it's such a priority. So they passed the bill to make her deploy the NG w/o fed $$.
The story hits Drudge and all the news services about how the AZ GOV is sending troops to the border. She's stolen the issue from the republicans, who had backed her into a corner by forcing her to put up or shut up on her statement.
So today she vetos the bill.
Wonder if Drudge will have those 3 inch headlines about this like he had yesterday for his inaccurate story about her actions.
Was Governor Napalitano ever going to give her executive approval to tax credits for corporations that provide private school scholarships?
Last summer she told legislators and advocates of school choice that she would indeed sign off on such legislation. No, she's not a fan of school choice. But she went along with it because of other stuff she wanted to get done budget-wise.
But when the legislation reached her, she yanked the football, leaving parents and kids tumbling in the dirt. Problem was, the tax credit "didn't sunset." Gee, maybe it would have been nice to mention that BEFORE? Well, okay, some kind of miscommunication, let's say. So the backers of the school choice bill gamely added the required sunset provision. The legislation passes again. And the governor vetoes it again!
The speaker of the house at the time, Jim Weiers, says there is only one explanation. According to his theory -- and I'm just repeating what he told reporters -- the governor LIED TO HIM. Said she wasn't going to yank the football, then yanked it after all. Well, it's a theory.
Lucy -- I mean Janet -- how can we trust you now?
This is Common Sense. I'm Paul Jacob.
