No it's because the cost of labor is astronomical. It's called lots and lots of demand and very limited supply.

I'd love the President to give me $600,000 for my home. I could invest the proceeds and live off it for the rest of my life. What makes Louisiana residents more privileged than me? It only fair if he's giving out handouts, I get my share too along with every one else in this country. We are entitled, aren't we?

When did the federal government start providing free homeowners insurance? Could you point that out in the Constitution for us?

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- During a tour of the hurricane-damaged Gulf Coast, President Bush on Wednesday pressed Congress to pass a proposal that would offer up to $150,000 to each Louisiana homeowner who lost a residence to Katrina.

To hell with this plan. I didn't vote for the democrats ! This is what homeowner's insurance is for.

If the policy covers replacement cost they only have to submit actual estimates to get settlement revised upward to cover market prices.I understand this is already happening in many cases.

Well you aren't here where people are fighting their insurance providers to give a fair payout. People need to repair their homes before any further damage happens yet they are still having problems getting the insurance companies to pay up what they had coverage on.

"Do you have terrorism and or flood coverage on your homeowners policy?Do you have a rider to cover tree removal if a tornado drops all the trees in your yard?"

Are you implying a flood wasn't an expected eventuallt calamity in New Orleans? I live near the water so I do have flood insurance;

"Terrorism Insurance??" How many times has THAT occured??

And since I don't live in tornado alley, I don't have tornado insurance OR even avalanche insurance....But guess what -- I don't have asteroid insurance either. Should I??

Needless to say, those who ignored having a flood insurance policy with their real estate lying below sea level were just plain stupid.

"What about the folks in Florida who got their backsides handed to them with four hurricanes in 1994, one in 1995. They got some FEMA assistance but not to that extent"

Sorry to inform you that you are anything BUT correct. According to FEMA's own website, those four storms combined destroyed 16,000 structures. Louisiana all by itself had 18,800 businesses destroyed. Overall, Katrina and Rita destroyed almost 300,000 structures along the gulf coastal areas from western Florida to Texas. Many folks don't realize that the "forgotten" hurricane Rita which hit soutwestern Louisiana would have been the worst storm to have hit the state were it not for Katrina.

FEMA statistics on it's own website show that Florida received over 5.7 billion dollars in federal assistance after their hurricanes. This averaged out to over $350,000 per destroyed structure. So far, of the monies earmarked for hurricane relief in the gulf coastal areas destroyed by Katrina and Rita, over 25 billion of it is either "overhead by FEMA or flood insurance payments. Neither of these categories is classified as "aid". The leftover 80 billion divided by 300,000 structures averages about $267,000 per destroyed structure. Looks like Florida did better than Louisiana in getting Federal money for their damages. BTW, the Louisiana plan to pay up to $150,000 per home is the exact amount Haley Barbour is giving to his residents whose homes were destroyed.

Bush touts $4.2 billion plan for Louisiana homeowners

And Louisiana politicians will find a way to steal $4 billion of this windfall, seeing as they have perfected that art since the time of Huey Long.

Thanks Uncle Sham. I don't think I am completely "anything but correct" but I appreciate your data. It should be pointed out that FEMA money does not go strictly to replacement of destroyed structures; it is used also for repairs to non-destroyed structures.

I'm not sure how Haley Barbour "giving to his residents" equates to the Federal government giving to Louisiana residents. Or did I read that wrong. I have no problem if Blanco wants to give Louisiana residents Louisiana money.

Haley is giving what he gets from the Feds. Same as Blanco. Thus, even though Blanco is an incompetant, Haley ain't no hero & the governor of Texas is every bit the crybaby posters on this forum have continually called the citizens of New Orleans.
