Gay/Lesbian Activists Sprinkle Downtown Boise With "Heteros Only" Stickers

BOISE - Stickers saying "Heterosexuals Only" were placed on bus benches and public drinking fountains in downtown Boise and at the Statehouse Monday morning.

A group of gay and lesbian activists, who spoke to KBCI-Local 2 News on condition of anonymity, put up the 150 stickers to protest the legislature's passage of a proposed constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage in Idaho, which voters will face in November.

"This was an issue we cared a great deal about," one activist told Local 2 News. "It affects us personally, it affects friends and family of ours."

The group says it used the "Heterosexuals Only" stickers to symbolize "Whites Only" and "Colored Only" stickers from past discrimination in the history of the American civil rights movement.

"In the struggle for human rights, an iconic image of that struggle has been signs that exclude classes of people," an activist said. "You know, 'Whites Only' on drinking fountains, or blacks to the back of the bus."

The group also said it selected Monday March 6 because it was the anniversary of the 1965 Selma to Montgomery march during the civil rights struggle.

Boise police reported no incidents or arrests, although the gay and lesbian activists said they were prepared to be taken into custody.

"You could make the case we were littering, or doing something more aggressive," an activist said. "Realistically, we have to be worried because there is some risk. I think we all have come together and decided the risk is worth taking a stand. I hope people will realize this...is a model of resistance that falls into a historical basis and they won't decide to be extremely punitive."

At the Statehouse, some legislative leaders disapproved not only of the way the group chose to express its message, but they also said the message itself is wrong.

"Because I think everybody has the same rights here in Idaho and we're not taking any body's rights away," said Sen. Bob Geddes, (R) Soda Spring, president pro tem of the Idaho Senate.

The stickers were easily removed, and were up only a short time. The gay and lesbian activists hope their symbolic message lasts longer.

Funny you should mention sheeposexual.

The homosexual lobby in Massachusetts passed legislation that greatly reduced or eliminated penalties for bestiality. That gives you some idea of the direction that they are moving in and what is on their agenda.

Homosexuals should have their third sex bathrooms/locker rooms if they are going to continue cruising for anonymous sexual encounters in bathrooms and peeking on other people doing their business.

Can't they just continue to use their basements, urine stained back allies, or slippery water bath houses like they do now? Why bother the rest of society? The tax payers would have to pay to clean those places up. I'm sure it would cost extra to even find a person who'd do a job like that.

Thanksgiving dinner must be a real riot in your family!

Sorry for the cheap shot, but I'm in the same boat. Not over "gay" issues, but my sister is extremely liberal.

We just don't talk politics. Ever.

They say if his neighbors hadn't caught him and had him arrested that he would still be "On the Lamb"...LOL

Does anybody else see the similarities between homosexuality and vampirism? Maybe it's just me.

Bingo!

I think the difference that is the focus here is man and woman, not "straight" and "gay."

No amount of legislation will make men and women identical. They are equal but not identical. A matched set!

NYC area talk-show host Andrew Wilkow (there's a thread here every Sunday for his Sunday show) has come up with blue diamonds. "Opposite" to pink triangles, and reflective of the concept that it takes TWO triangles to make a diamond.

I think I have it right.

I have an idea that would compliment this gay "initiative": "homosexuals only" and "lesbians only" stickers for all closet doors. They could "get back to where they once belonged".

"And who was behind that idea? "

Four state legislators that are owned by the gay lobby sponsored the change in the bestiality law, but in Mass it is difficult to determine who actually initiated the action.

For the list - I wonder what the numbers from Idaho will be.

If OR voted down homosexual "marriage", I can't imagine Idaho going for it.

A biohazard team would probably be required for cleanup.

I cite fear of AIDS/HIV as the reason that all police and ambulance crews use rubber gloves before touching anyone (even if no accident has occurred and there is no bleeding).

"I think the difference that is the focus here is man and woman, not "straight" and "gay.""

I'm tired of using the terms gay and straight, how about queer and normal?

Gay means happy, cheerful, Queer means odd.

I think they are odd, but I'll give them the choice of either being called "Queers" or "Odds".

If its going to be a descriptive term, it should fit the description, besides, I don't see them as all that happy.
