While U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., and his most prominent challenger, Democratic state Treasurer Bob Casey Jr., are heavy favorites to win their party nominations for Senate, both face competition in May.
Chuck Pennaccio, a Philadelphia history professor, and Alan Sandals, a lawyer from Philadelphia, are challenging Mr. Casey. Like Mr. Hoeffel, they are both emphasizing their abortion rights positions, hoping to peel Democratic votes away from Mr. Casey, who, like Mrs. Knoll, is an opponent of abortion.
Mr. Santorum faces opposition, but not much of a threat, from John Featherman, a Philadelphia real estate professional.
Democrats can anticipate contested primaries for three U.S. House seats in the region.

In the 12th District, Washington County Commissioner Diana Irey is unopposed for the Republican nomination against Rep. John P. Murtha, D-Johnstown, in a race that will be viewed, at least in part, as a referendum on the veteran Democrat's outspoken rejection of Bush administration policies in the war in Iraq.
