'Red America' gets the blues over left-leaning Oscars
Yahoo ^ | Mar 7 | AFP

Posted on 03/07/2006 9:22:24 PM PST by george76

The divide between conservative and liberal America was on full display at the Oscars, with both the winners and losers championing social and political topics heralded by the left.

Across the United States, in blogs and on call-in radio talk shows, conservatives seethed that their point of view was not represented in the choice films honored with nominations -- let alone among those given awards.

"This year's Oscar nominees include stories of homosexual sheep herders, a transvestite and Japanese prostitutes," ...

American conservatives are accustomed to frowning at liberal Hollywood, but they were more disaffected than ever by the left-of-center themes of this year's Oscar nominees.

the conservative Concerned Women for America (CWA)...complained that the few Hollywood films it approved of had loads of popular appeal and impressive box office, but "got the cold shoulder from Hollywood elitists."

Conservative America long has been at odds with liberal Tinseltown, championing films with religious overtones like the blockbuster "Passion of the Christ," which was snubbed at the 2004 Oscars.

This year another hit with Christian overtones was the film "The Chronicles of Narnia...which has raked in more than 637 million dollars in ticket receipts around the world...

Narnia's ticket sales nearly equaled those of the five best picture Oscar nominees combined.

"This year's anticipated Oscar-winning movies, reviewed in light of their box office appeal, reveal Hollywood's true motives.

They are far less concerned about entertaining people than they are with trying to shape the culture and advance a political agenda."

"If you want to be truly courageous and take actual risks then make a movie that gives conservatives a fair shake or, God forbid, make a movie where a Liberal is the bad guy."

I'm sure your overall argument is something like 'Liberals are bad republicans are good'. Unfortunately I can state the opposite case giving millions of examples for either side so your examples dont add up to squat. Whats driving this inherent dislike? did you grow up with it? From my point of view its the same form of argument people use to justify racism. (Post 136 )

Nah, don't bother with millions. Just give us 10 examples.

I'm confused, probably because I'm not American, but what are the major personality differences between Lib and Dem? (Post 110)

Do you mean that a liberal applauds mediocrity? (Post 123)

You seem pretty confused and unable to notice the difference between Liberals and Republicans. According to your post #136, it is a form of racism to point out the difference between the two Parties as George76 did in post #127 and #130 to which you cleverly daubed with generalizations. I suggest you find another site that aligns with your core values and way of thinking. FreeRepublic is a conservative site that promotes causes which further conservatism in America... and there's no confusion about that.

The sooner we stop sending our money their way, the sooner they will go away (or "get it", which is highly doubtful)

The Oscars is nothing more that self congratulatory flatulence by Hollyweird for Hollyweird. It is self absorption in the vacuum of fantasy land.

Nah, I'm not blue. I just don't give the stupid bastards my hard earned money. And I think the majority of Americans, red or blue, agree that this years "Best Movie" nominations really sucked...really sucked. And for those silly people who think Brokeback Mountain was great, would it have been so great if the romantic relationship was heterosexual? And yes, I tried seeing Crash and could only stomach it through to where the poor father who just gave his magic cloak to his daughter was hit/killed by the two racists idiots. (And no I didn't pay to see that one!) :P

And Hollywood stars a la Loony Clooney epitomize the anti-American Male. He is full of self adulation, snide remarks, conceited wisecracks, while his claim to fame this year are two left wing financially sponsored movies that repeat the same old liberal mantra that has been repeated by these idiots time and again.

On a slightly offnote .......

Did anyone happen to see the TV ads for Jake G's Jarhead DVD movie earlier in the week? I am 90% sure, it said "Academy Award WINNER". Then tonight, I saw it again, and it said "Academy Award NOMINEE". Wonder if they "jumped the shark" when putting the ad together, thinking he was going to win. Did anyone else see this?

Maybe next year they'll perform a live partial birth abortion and George Clooney can strap on a suicide vest and blow his sorry arse to kingdom come.

No way.

Stevie's "Islamic Peace Prayer" of Munich II will feature Tom Cruise's "mission" to stop the Evil Israeli Defense Force from arresting peaceful Muslims (who were simply drinking tea and reading their "Holy" Korans). However, by film's end, Cruise will rely on the help of two very intelligent homosexual men to rescue the kidnapped Scientologists. During the operation, they discover that it's really a Jewish plot to stop the success of black rappers everywhere!!!

Stay tuned!!!

Which movie had the Japanese prostitutes in them?

I lived in Tokyo, Near Roppongi. All the prostitutes there were tall, blond Russians!
If your familiar with Japanese culture you can get the western joke about Japan - If a Japanese man wants a JAPANESE prostitute he goes home.

The domestic and international releases are closely tied, often day-and-date. They can't keep the "promotional expenses" going "indefinitely." That's not how it works. The major promotional costs for BM have already been incurred. The picture is solidly in the black. Does that mean net players will see profits? They don't call net points "monkey points" for nothing. But by any objective monetary yardstick, the picture is a financial success. I am certain that the returns have vastly exceeded the most wildly optimistic forecasts in the Universal marketing dept.

I am confused, that's the main reason that I'm asking questions.
Another reason is that I've never experienced American political/cultural values through conversation. I'm genuinely curious as to the responses that I've been getting, which are mostly along the lines of 'four legs good two legs bad'

I dont think that its racism to point out differences between two cultural groups, you misunderstand my comments and I cant be bothered going through them again now. I'm not political and I try to avoid generalisations whenever possible.

As to going away, I think I will.

Thanks for the learning curve
