'Red America' gets the blues over left-leaning Oscars
Yahoo ^ | Mar 7 | AFP

The divide between conservative and liberal America was on full display at the Oscars, with both the winners and losers championing social and political topics heralded by the left.

Across the United States, in blogs and on call-in radio talk shows, conservatives seethed that their point of view was not represented in the choice films honored with nominations -- let alone among those given awards.

"This year's Oscar nominees include stories of homosexual sheep herders, a transvestite and Japanese prostitutes," ...

American conservatives are accustomed to frowning at liberal Hollywood, but they were more disaffected than ever by the left-of-center themes of this year's Oscar nominees.

the conservative Concerned Women for America (CWA)...complained that the few Hollywood films it approved of had loads of popular appeal and impressive box office, but "got the cold shoulder from Hollywood elitists."

Conservative America long has been at odds with liberal Tinseltown, championing films with religious overtones like the blockbuster "Passion of the Christ," which was snubbed at the 2004 Oscars.

This year another hit with Christian overtones was the film "The Chronicles of Narnia...which has raked in more than 637 million dollars in ticket receipts around the world...

Narnia's ticket sales nearly equaled those of the five best picture Oscar nominees combined.

"This year's anticipated Oscar-winning movies, reviewed in light of their box office appeal, reveal Hollywood's true motives.

They are far less concerned about entertaining people than they are with trying to shape the culture and advance a political agenda."

"If you want to be truly courageous and take actual risks then make a movie that gives conservatives a fair shake or, God forbid, make a movie where a Liberal is the bad guy."

Yeah, I guess I'm lucky. My girlfriend said there's no way she was going to see some movie with two butt pirates getting it on, no way in hell.

Haven't watched the Oscars in years, but I love Oscar week on TV. Reruns of some great Oscar winning movies.

All-in-all last week was pretty good, especially as the queer life style movie was a loser.

I love it when people answer my questions, especially when they hit the nail right on the head of my argument.

I'm lucky too.

From the commercial on TV, you would have no idea it was about gay guys. It shows cowboys, nice scenery, pretty women, etc. She just had no idea. If I didn't read FR, I'd probably not know either.

Thanks to FR for helping avoid a "surprise" at the theaters.

You're missing the point.
I dont want to get into a tirade why one is better than the other, I would just like my initial question answered. It was the 'ghostbusters' comment that sparked my interest.

You said that you have "millions of examples."

Either back off on the claim of the millions of examples or provide the millions of examples.

Are you saying that you do not take personal responsibilty for your own words.

No point george, he'll just start on a tirade of moral relativism and leave your head spinning.

Yeah, there's a secret counter that sends a flag to the GSA (Gay Security Agency), which then starts sending you battery-operated devices in the mail. Yee-hah!

That Oscar montage which besmirched the memory of classic westerns still bugs me. Argh!

My girlfriend watched parts of it and thought I was wierd for not watching it. Then again she didn't understand why I threatened to dump her if she insisted on having me take her to the butt rammers movie.

Make sure she's not a democrat at heart before this relationship gets to the engagement level.

This sums up how 65 million of us who voted for GW felt about the Oscars.

This year another hit with Christian overtones was the film "The Chronicles of Narnia...which has raked in more than 637 million dollars in ticket receipts around the world...

I disagree, I think Narnia, as a big budget blockbuster in the tradition of The Ten Commandments, Spartacus and Ben Hur, should have been nominated for Best Picture. Why not" It was a splendid film. How far we've degenerated since the "Golden Age of Films".
