Harris Poll Shows Military Still Most-Admired U.S. Institution

WASHINGTON, March 7, 2006 – The military continues to be the most admired institution in America, according to the latest Harris Poll. A total of 47 percent of Americans said they have a "great deal" of confidence in the military. Some 38 percent of Americans said they had "only some" confidence and 14 percent said they had "hardly any" confidence in the military.

The military was followed in the poll by small business - a new category in 2005 - with 45 percent of Americans saying they had a great deal of confidence; colleges and universities, 38 percent; the Supreme Court, 33 percent; and Medicine, 31 percent.

At the bottom of the survey, released March 2, were law firms at 10 percent, Congress at 10 percent, organized labor at 12 percent, major companies at 13 percent and the press at 14 percent.

Anchoring the middle was organized religion at 30 percent, the White House at 25 percent, public schools at 22, the courts and justice system at 21, and television news at 19.

The military has done well in the poll since the mid-1980s. The first poll, conducted in 1966, had the military at 61 percent approval rating. The next poll, conducted in 1971 showed the corrosive effect of the Vietnam War on America. Only 27 percent of Americans had confidence in the military then.

The public confidence in the military climbed after the 1970s and by 1989 the military was the most-trusted organization in the United States.

Harris Interactive, based in Rochester, N.Y., conducts the poll without sponsors. "We do this on our own," public relations coordinator Kelly Gullo said.

Gullo said Harris Interactive pollsters canvassed 1,016 U.S. adults via telephone. She said the sampling error for the survey is plus or minus 3 percent.

People are funny with lawyers. It's always "yeah, lawyers suck. They're all a bunch of lying, thieving sleazebags. Except MY lawyer. He's awesome."

That tends to come with the territory, though. A good chunk of our job is to make someone's life miserable on behalf of someone else. This goes for both sides of any given lawsuit. On one side, you've got a party whose life has been changed for the worse by some injury he has incurred, and is trying to make his life go back to normal, and on the other side you've got a guy whose life savings is being threatened. Both sides are going to hate each other. There's no way around that.

As for truly frivolous lawsuits, well, for every lawyer pushing one from the plaintiff's side, there's another one on the defendant's side trying to shut it down. But people seem to forget to provide an exception for those civil defense lawyers in their "I hate lawyers" rants.

Lawyers bring the lack of respect they get on themselves. Their secret ethics committees are nothing short of foxes guarding the hen house. $15 for a photocopy, $100 for a ten second phone call. And don't do work for them- there's an old saying," Doctors-slow pay; Lawyers- no pay"
You are right about idiots who say "except my lawyer". An old friend of mine used to say that about the lawyer who "handled" a lot of his financial affairs. Since he died, the family has nothing and I think the lawyer got a one year (and I think it was suspended) sentence. The money's hidden somewhere.
Until there's some way to simplify our legal codes to it will continue to be "a Government of the lawyers, by the lawyers and for the lawyers."

The rules of ethics that lawyers are governed by are quite public, and we can be disbarred for disobeying them. It works just like any criminal violation.

Clients do not get billed that much for photocopies. The expenses are stipulated to in the contract through which you retain your lawyer. As for a hundred bucks for a ten-second phone call, that won't happen unless you've agreed to pay your lawyer $3,600 a minute, or $216,000 an hour. Finally, I've never had any problems getting paid by any lawyer I've clerked for.

If you suspect the lawyer of stealing money, sue him. You will probably not be surprised to find out that juries don't take kindly to lawyers who are getting sued for legal malpractice.

Until there's some way to simplify our legal codes to it will continue to be "a Government of the lawyers, by the lawyers and for the lawyers."

The law can be simple when people live their lives in black-and-white terms. If statutes get simplified, then they will have gaps. And if laws have gaps, it's left to judges to fill in the blanks. That's the last thing you want.

Do you mean to tell me that 14% of those polled say that they have confidence in the press???

I don't suppose they though to ask if anybody has any confidence in the Democrat Party?

Quit trying to suck up.

We all know lawyers are bottom feeding, blood sucking scum.

Anyone that makes a living from other's misfortunes is a true pile of dung.

Shall we start with the ACLU - ?

Or are they the "bad" lawyers?

Care to guess when the legal profession really went south and joined the ranks of the carney hucksters?

You are correct, in one point.

When you need one, you really need one.

Yea, same for the IRS types.

Come on flat tax!

Other than the above statements, I have no problems with the legal profession.

:)

What do you think of doctors?

They help people.

Yes, they get paid $$$$.

But they don't file a lawsuit against cancer, or a virus.

You folks will, though. Once you figure out how to do it.

If cancers and viruses had money and we could enforce judgments against them, then yeah, we would sue the hell out of them.

We all know lawyers are bottom feeding, blood sucking scum.

Not all lawyers are scum. Many are, and the ambulance-chasing trial lawyers seem to give the entire profession a bad name. Though it seems that honest lawyers are indeed a dying breed.

btw--I'm a PoliSci major, likely will go to law schoo

President Bush has his lowest poll ratings, says the MSM. His approval rating is 41%; media confidence is 14-19%. Is the pot calling the kettle black?
