SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A new book about Barry Bonds says he used steroids for at least five seasons, casting new doubts about the baseball superstar's exploits as he seeks to pass Babe Ruth for second place on the all-time home run list.
The book "Game of Shadows", an excerpt of which was on the "Sports Illustrated" Web site on Tuesday, said the San Francisco Giants outfielder took steroids via injections, pills, creams and liquid starting in 1998. His most productive seasons followed while he was in his mid-to-late 30s, most notably in 2001 when he hit a single-season record 73 home runs.
"If it really is true, I'm sorry to hear it because it does cast a shadow," Babe Ruth's last surviving daughter, Julia Ruth Stevens, 88, told Reuters.
"I don't know if daddy were here what he would say," she continued. "He was always on the side of ballplayers."
Asked if it might be appropriate for Bonds to retire before passing her father in the home run record books, she said: "I certainly would not have any objections to that."

Barry Bonds - the man that puts the "ass" in asterisk.
At least with Mark McGuire, who as a rookie hit 49 home runs and was a HUGE physical specimen, you can argue he had the power to begin with, and the fact that over HIS CAREER his home run to AT BAT ratio is right there with the BABE, you know he was always a Home Run hitter.
However with Barry Bonds there is NO SUCH normality. His prodigious home run hitting in the LATTER stage of his career is quite definitively a product of steroid enhancement.
Nothing of what Bonds was taking at the time was illegal. Please tell me I am wrong.
What I am saying is IF it was legal at the time, no problem. It it was illegal, I agree, throw the bumb out. Pretty simple.

Pitiful. Bud Selig should be summarily executed.
LOL
He is a total disgrace and an embarrassment to any and all baseball fans. If he had an ounce of pride--he would retire. He is an arrogant, shameless cheater.
Hi All!! Call me for a autographed copy!
I am surprised the Bonds-bots arent out in full force defending this human fraud and cheat of the century, or two centuries. What a disgrace to the whole game? McGwire also. Sickening.
You may be right. 5n addition to being a big cheater, he also showed his racist side when he stated that he only cared about surpassing Babe Ruth and not Hank Aaron.
Bonds should never pass neither Ruth nor Aaron. What a fraud.
Palmeiro is 9th all time! That is horrible.
If they let him play, how can major league baseball even say with a 'straight-face' that they have a serious anti-drug policy? How can the SF Giants even allow him to wear their uniform? I can't even believe that the Giants are going to allow their uniform to be disgraced any more than it already has by Bonds.
As a lifelong Giants Fan, I'm torn, I'm Torn I tell ya!
Breaks the heart.
The records are adulterated, but whatever method is used to remove steroid-inflated records will done after the fact-- Without the benefit of whatever 'policy' baseball shows it can run effectively to punish 'juicers'
