WASHINGTON Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld on Tuesday rejected suggestions Iraq is engulfed in a civil war and claimed media reports have exaggerated the violence since an attack on a revered Shiite mosque.
"I do not believe they are in a civil war today," Rumsfeld told reporters at the Pentagon. But he said "there has always been a potential for civil war."
Rumsfeld spoke nearly two weeks after the Feb. 22 bombing of a sacred Shiite shrine in Samarra, which has touched off violent reprisals between sects that have killed hundreds of Iraqis. Hoping to keep Iraqi efforts to form a unity government moving forward, U.S. officials have acknowledged concern about the violence, but repeatedly denied that they fear a full-scale civil war is erupting.
Rumsfeld acknowledged that the attack on the mosque has delayed efforts to form a unified government in Iraq in which Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds would share some power.
Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said he believes the people in Iraq "have looked into the abyss and said that's not where we want to go."

When all is said and done. Who you gonna believe Uncle Don or a script reading talking head?
Have they bothered to ask the Iraqis?
I'm a Rummy fan.
Yep
And if one takes the time to really think about it
It's pretty sick that Liberals are hoping for people to be killed ... all to make Bush look bad
Me also. Reminds me of my Grandfather, when he spoke which was rarely it was the truth.
Win at any cost!
We need to remember that they see Bush as a symbol of the conservative "movement," whether conservatives this Bush is a conservative, or not.
When they attack Bush, they're attacking us.

It's funny, in a way. They have wasted billions in PR attacking Bush, and he won't even be running in 2008. So they'll have to start all over again, demonizing someone else.
Heck, as Ann points out, they're still busy demonizing McCarthy and Nixon. They just can't help themselves. At least they finally seem to be leaving Hoover alone, but they'll drag him back out any time the economy looks weak.
Let's not go to Daily Kos. It is a silly place.
(I checked it out...what a bunch of idiots)
They're fighting against Conservatism and will do and say anything.
Bush is just the most obvious symbol of their ineptitude. The Media's ability to divide the Republican party/Conservatives is pretty impressive, though.
Of course, that's Bush's fault...
The is nothing new. Wasn't the MSM predicting this not too long ago? In fact, they have been predicting civil war there right from the start. You find out from people just over there that most of the country is quite. The blowing up of the Golden Mosque was an act of extreme desperation. Al Qaeda and Ansar al-Islam know they have no hope of gaining power in Iraq. The only thing they can hope for is the booby prize--the chaos of civil war. In that scenario they will be able to establish a thugocracy in some remote part of the country to use as a base of ops, at least as long as the chaos lasts.
