"an expired inspection sticker, an expired driver's license and dubious proof of insurance. The cost of his traffic infractions: $675 and a wait in line recently at Houston Municipal Court."

In CA, simple lack of (written proof of) insurance is IIRC $1350. non-appealable, no questions asked, no excuse taken, court appearance mandatory. I guess that would be unless you're an illegal, in which case you'd probably get a tuition discount on the state run junior college closest to you with a relocation allowance, a rent voucher, and a "dollars off" coupon for your next Western Union remittance back to Mexico.

I always ask if I can mail the fine.

You might want to reconsider that in the future.

Apparently, that only encourages them.

I didn't say anything about imposing fines. I just think an @sshole who shows that kind of disregard for motor vehicle laws has no business being on the road.

It's pretty pathetic when you're a gainfully employed chemical technician in Texas and you find yourself facing a string of violations that one would normally associate with illegal aliens who've been in this country for about 17 minutes.

Bet his attitude had something to do with the outcome.

Which is another problem, and should have nothing to do with the facts........or the fine.

I understand. I just think 5 years is a little harsh when there were no injuries and no property damage.

I was charged with a semi-serious traffic infraction which I was not guilty of. I hired an attorney, he presented my evidence to the DA, who agreed to drop the charges with prejudice if I would be the court costs. Which I did. That's the way it works these days. You are guilty when charged, you pay when your innocent and you pay more when your not.

That's the problem . . . if you wait until there are injuries or property damage before punishing people harshly, it's too late (in the case of someone who doesn't have mandatory auto insurance).

If someone gets in an accident with no license or insurance and there are injuries and/or property damage, then they should never be permitted to drive again. Call it the "capital punishment" of motor vehicle laws.

Remember who's version we're hearing.

But in this case I think the officer who handcuffed him to the guy with the runs had great wisdom.

Do you think fines bother a kid who just up and borrows dad's Rolls?

Do you think he will ever forget his time 'cuffed to a guy squirting everywhere as he spins on a sholder like Curly?

So, you like the idea of punishing people for something that they MIGHT do.

Interesting.

Obviously the next step is to provide us with dormitories, or domociles of some type, assign us to group work teams, feed us two or three times a day, and all "money" goes directly to Them, for our own and others' good.

Might as well get rid of the middlemen.

Well, I did like this tidbit that was tucked in there...

Even "sin taxes," such as the 41 cents Texas collects from each pack of cigarettes, have maximums.

If they go too high, smugglers move in with tax-free contraband or people buy in a neighboring state.

At least they figured this out.

In fact, it's very much a tax — a compulsory payment that helps fund government. Texas lawmakers have added at least one new surcharge to traffic tickets every legislative session since 1987, according to a Houston Chronicle search of bills, statutes and budget books. This covers a span when both Democrats and Republicans controlled state government.

Yep and until people stand up and say enough is enough and vote for the largest 2cd political party in america the single republicrat party will continue to grow and expand the size and scope of all levels of government because they know that there will be no consequence to their actions

Somebody finally put it all together.
About time

All that's good to know...evertime people holler" Why doesn't the government do something about this?" We need to remember it'll cost us 50 times more than it's really worth than if we'd done it as individuals.
