March 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The 94th Fighter Squadron, famous for its historic "Hat in the Ring" insignia and legendary aviator Eddy Rickenbacker, began receiving F-22 Raptors from Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT - News) today. The two 5th Generation stealthy, air dominance fighters are assigned to the second operational squadron in the U.S. Air Force.
ADVERTISEMENT The two Raptors will join F-22s flying today as part of the 1st Fighter Wing's 27th Fighter Squadron at Langley Air Force Base, Va. Lockheed Martin has completed final assembly on 71 of the 107 fighters now on contract, and 63 have been delivered.

The hornet would already have been dead from beyond visual range. At some point the hornet pulled 7.6 g's to get into a shooting solution for guns, but for all we know the hornet may have already been dead and they never knocked off the engagement as some pilots just can't resist the chance to go eyeball to eyeball. In real life a raptor driver would never be that stupid to get low and slow. Very well likely (F-22 would typical engage BVR obviously) - But I think this was a situation where BVR was not allowed - But there again, it still could have come from horse play after the fact as well - I sent my friend an email asking for some more info - He a Hornet driver with the VF-103 -
The AF likes using several of the USN VF's as aggressors, since the F-18/F-18E/F have the noise pointability of the FSU threat aircraft from what I've been told.
Pukin Dog is an expert on this topic so his words should be taken for their value and as he suggested regarding the HUD symbology there very well could be more here then meets the eye.
My first thought without looking into all info within the HUD was the Raptor pilot had to lose his visual of the 18 -

Also more likely is that that shot was part of an agreement to insure the Raptor driver bought no beer that night. The Hornet driver will have a lifetime of stories in exchange for a few brews.

F-18/F-18E/F have the noise pointability of the FSU threat aircraft from what I've been told. Not to beat the point to death, but only a Hornet E driver could say that with a straight face. The Super Hornet is a nice bird, but it cant out-fly its older brothers in the Hornet C/D. It carries more gas and gear, but thats it. It is slower and less agile. But its pretty!
Even close in, the Raptor would make it look like it was standing still. Tell your buddy to come clean, it should only cost you a six pack.

Good deal, DevSix.
You can remind your friend that there are a few former drivers on this forum who can detect any B.S from the new guys. If you cant find me, ask Rokke or Mr Rogers. Rogers was a back seater though, so he might not give the most intelligent answers.

Good point. Here's hoping that our Chicom friends haven't got their maitenance doctrine figured out yet. Putting a bunch of MiG's up is one thing. Keeping them up is the challenge.

I think he's got a valid "snap" here. The witness cue in the upper left corner indicates he's squeezing off something. But as a Viper guy, I'm not Hornet HUD expert. Why is there an "X" over the word "GUNS"?
I know several people who have gunned the F-22. Of course the whole thing is a little unrealistic, as it is highly doubtful the F-22 will ever be in a WVR engagement. But everyone has a bad day, even if you are flying the world's greatest fighter.

I admit that the dude is on the trigger, I just think the shot is set up for video, since there is no G on the Raptor at the time. He's just sitting there. Also, the Hornet is hardly pulling with 1.7, I mean come on? I cant be sure on the X either, but I wasn't looking at that. The Raptor is not evading and you know he could have denied the shot from that angle.
Its a bribe, I tell ya!

It could be a bribe. I used to get lots of free Tanquary by agreeing to let Tomgrape drivers get a little HUD video of a Viper. But then I'd always turn them into strafe rags before we landed just to make sure their ego's didn't get too big.

"Bat-turn"?!?! Did you guys even wear g-suits? I've made tighter turns in my MD-11 than your old bucket of bolts. Now you want to talk bat-turn, just drop your mask, get your RIO to give you a nice back rub, and watch a clean Viper turn up its own tailpipe at 9+ g's. Now THAT'S a bat-turn!

I have no idea what you and Putin Dog are saying but it is interesting anyway. The thing I don't understand is how one can tell how many g's the other plane is pulling. Do the wings droop or what?

Ah yeah, I guess its on?
First, 'rookie' you forget that my time in the -N gave me exposure to what your little bird can do. Here's the thing. If I get in trouble, I can always just disappear, come back over and blast you in the nose, with my RIO still napping. I'll boresight you at 15' and slave a 9 at your forehead at the growl. Your pee-wee radar cant touch me for another 5, and by that time, you will have blinded yourself in your own flares. So now I'm up at 20, inverted, watching you try to spell E-N-E-R-G- BOOM!
