Car Bomb Attacks Kill, Wound Iraqis; Soldiers Find Roadside Bomb

WASHINGTON, March 6, 2006 – Two car bombs have killed six Iraqi civilians and wounded 34 in the past two days in Iraq, and troops from Multinational Division Baghdad discovered a roadside bomb and detained suspects who fled from the scene. Six Iraqis were killed and 23 were wounded today when a car bomb detonated near the Baqubah mayor's office. Iraqi army and police provided security and initial medical attention to the wounded on the scene, officials said. The wounded were taken to Baqubah General Hospital for treatment.

Community leaders were meeting with Baqubah Mayor Khalid Al Seniary at the mayor's office to discuss how the people of Diyala could stay unified and work to improve security throughout the province. The attack was believed to be an effort by insurgent forces to try and incite sectarian violence within the community, officials said.

Elsewhere, nine Iraqi civilians were injured in western Baghdad yesterday when a car bomb detonated. The people wounded in the attack were waiting in their cars in a line at a gas station. All of the injuries were minor in nature, officials said.

In other news, Multinational Division Baghdad's troops from 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, found a roadside bomb west of Baghdad and detained four suspected terrorists who fled from the scene. The bomb consisted of one 155 mm round and one 130 mm round in a bag with a cell phone. A washing machine timer, six-volt battery and computer were also found at the site. An explosives disposal team conducted a controlled detonation to eliminate the threat.
