Ethanol Industry Sets Record in 2005

Washington, DC [RenewableEnergyAccess.com] The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) announced that the U.S. ethanol industry set annual production records in 2005, producing just less than 4 billion gallons (3.904 billion gallons) and averaging nearly 255,000 barrels of ethanol production daily, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

"These figures represent not only the tremendous growth our industry is experiencing, but also the future growth that will occur," said RFA President Bob Dinneen.

"Demand for ethanol will only continue to grow as refiners remove MTBE from the marketplace and more Americans switch to this clean burning, renewable fuel," said Dinneen. "The U.S. ethanol industry, with 2.1 billion gallons of capacity currently under construction, will continue to expand to meet this soaring demand."

Currently, 95 ethanol plants have a combined production capacity of more than 4.3 billion gallons a year.

This study, widely quoted here, completely ignores the value of any other product that results from the process.

For instance, if "corn requires 29 percent more fossil energy than the fuel produced; " suppose they're right and it takes $1.29 of corn to generate $1 worth of fuel. However, we also get, say, $0.50 worth of animal feed and $0.10 worth of carbon dioxide. In that case, we haven't lost $0.29 on the deal, we've gained $0.31.

The $ figures are purely hypothetical but the point is that these guys only counted the value of the fuel output from the ethanol generation process and nothing else.

Thank you! That saves me from having to type the same stuff every day all day to try to educate these morons. If you do a search on chuckles and ethanol on FR, I have practically written a book debunking all the tripe spewed here. They have no clue yet argue till the bandwidth is used up about stuff they make up as they go along.

I have studied this subject since the '73 embargo and Carter. I have made my own ethanol for 25 cents a gallon. I have ran straight ethanol in my own engine I built and it didn't destroy even so much as a gasket. Yet night after night I listen to the same crap about how we can't grow enough corn or it cost too much or your engine will be damaged, blah, blah, blah. So I write back "make it with coal, that we have 250 years worth of coal, and Hitler made his fuel with coal 60 years ago, and they write back and say I must work for ADM or what does coal have to do with corn? They are retarded. I think the oil companies have given them subliminal messages so long they are brain damaged.

I love oil, I own COP stock, I own EOG drillers stock, I have owned and will continue to buy and sell oil stock. I am not anti oil. I wish we would drill in ANWAR. I cut trees, not hug them. But I also love my country and love to drive. I'm not willing to give up the American lifestyle and bow to Mecca to get my tank full. I would be in favor of any alternative fuel that gets the job done. I just see ethanol as the ONLY practical answer that doesn't use pie in the sky tech 15 years out. We can do it now if we set our minds to it.

I think you'll find that there are a very few morons that don't want to be educated - they prefer to wallow in their ignorance, and spout off when the subject of ethanol comes up. And my only connection to ethanol & corn is that of an informed consumer. If I can be educated on the subject, anyone can.

Brazil has a sizable domestic petroleum and natural gas industry, and their state-controlled corporation, PetroBras, is heavily involved in the ethanol business. Your friendly local oil conglomerate may be the ones buying their E-blend from Brazil and selling it to you some day soon.

As someone on the thread has pointed out, alcohol import duties make it too expensive. So I agree we could "easily" do it if that difficulty were removed. Still, I think US technology has a key role to play.

Also, you're too pessimistic. to say that this is all about buying votes. There is a real problem. Volatility in the oil market is hurtful because it is so fundamental. This volatility is going to become worse with China and India becoming so much more developed. There is a legitimate role for government in this.

Finally, economic efficiency, while very, very important, cannot be our only criterion. We are funding governments whose interests are inimical to us. Iran is using oil proceeds to develop nuclear weapons. If an application of US techology to the energy sector could render oil unimportant, that is worth some subsidy.
