Didn't think she had a chance. Glad to see Walk the Line won something.
ACTOR - SUPPORTING: George Clooney (Syriana)
Expected. This would be his consolation prize for the night. Paul Giamatti shut out 2 years in a row.
ACTRESS - SUPPORTING: Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener)
A happy surprise. She deserved it, and she's beautiful, even 7 months pregnant. I had surmised that this would be Brokeback's only acting award.
CINEMATOGRAPHY: Memoirs of a Geisha
I didn't see it, but from the scenes I saw, I was pretty certain it would take several techie awards. Oddly enough, when it came out, it was considered an early Oscar contender, or frontrunner. And then was shut out of the major categories.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM: Tsotsi
This was my 2nd choice, only
ANIMATED FEATURE: Wallace & Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit
I couldn't complain with any of the nominees. Thankfully, Chicken Little was not nominated.
COSTUME DESIGN: Memoirs of a Geisha
FILM EDITING: CRASH No other comments on techie stuff.
DOCUMENTARY FEATURE: March of the Penguins
Nice! I didn't think it had a chance.
ORIGINAL SCORE: Brokeback Mountain It's music, so I didn't really care. Musicians are more likely to vote craft, not politics.
BEST GAY PORN INVOLVING FARM ANIMALS: Brokeback Mountain (ok, ok, maybe it didn't happen, but they probably thought about this award.)
(grin)
DOCUMENTARY SHORT: A Note of Triumph: The Golden Age of Norman Corwin
ART DIRECTION: Memoirs of a Geisha
MAKEUP: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
Nice that Narnia got one award, and the makeup was good.
VISUAL EFFECTS: King Kong
SOUND MIXING: King Kong
SOUND EDITING: King Kong
SHORT FILM - LIVE ACTION: Six Shooter
SHORT FILM - ANIMATED: The Moon and the Son: An Imagined Conversation
ORIGINAL SONG: It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp, by Hustle and Flow.
Outrage came first, but then I really didn't care. It was obviously a light year with only 3 songs in the running, and at least it was a song by the most basic definition of the word. Now I think I have a shot at winning an Oscar: I'm forming a rap group called D.J. Burlap and the Wicked P. Look for us in 2007.
Overall, it did seem like a little bit of a retreat. They went with racial politics over any other. They could've done better had they at least nominated a worthier Best Picture nominee as even a token, say "Walk the Line" or even "Narnia" or "Memoirs". We'll see next year.
They're saying that the big budget film is over, but I don't think so. Not just yet. I liked the big push they gave to go to the movies to see movies.

More importantly. What were the National Ratings and the breakdown by geography?
