Zimbabwe 'Running Out of Wheat' (Former Hero of the Left Creates not-so paradise)
BBC ^ | 3/4/06 | BBC

Posted on 03/05/2006 6:31:48 AM PST by Tulane

Zimbabwe has only two weeks of wheat supply left, while citizens are faced with soaring bread prices, Zimbabwe's main milling organisation has said. The cost of bread has risen by 30%, pushing Zimbabwe's inflation rate to more than 600%.

Zimbabwe has been in economic decline since President Robert Mugabe began seizing white-owned farms in 2000.

The government is reported to have put its security forces on alert in case the discontent leads to protests.

David Govere, deputy chairman of the Millers Association, told AFP news agency the scarcity of wheat has meant a reduction in supplies to bakeries.

It's a travesty of justice that the country has been so run down by Robert Mugabe's regime

"Due to depleted stocks, GMB [state-run food distributor Grain Marketing Board] is now giving us 400 tons of wheat a week, down from 600 tons," he is quoted as saying.

Shortages of wheat could force bakers to import flour from South Africa, which could lead to more price rises.

A loaf of bread in Zimbabwe currently costs $66,000 Zimbabwean (66 US cents), having risen 30% in just one week.

Is it true some people have begun to kill the endangered animals in the parks for food?

May the end result of that comment be the same.

What a shame. That country used to not only feed itself, it also fed many others.

I have read that. Mugabe is a disgrace. Even the American left won't support him now...

Hugo Chavez will be viewed in the same light in a few years. His country (excuse me, liberal paradise) continues to fall deeper into poverty as a result of his "reforms." And our left keeps sending him accolades.

Mugabe has take a lesson from Mao and Stalin - starve to death those portions of the population he sees as a threat to his autocratic control. Although Satan is endlessly creative, he does tend to return to those methods which work.

Good one. Not surprising news to those of us here at FR but still good info. The rest of the world is sure going to be shocked when the MSM can't ignore this story anymore. Thanks to liberals this will become one of the most underreported stories of the decade, until it becomes the elephant in the living room.

Of course Mugerbe knew from the beginning of his land grabs that the UN would be there to bail them out when the whole moronic idea failed.

Watch South Africa!

With SA "leaders" scheduled to pow-wow with Hamas in Pretoria very soon this once shining gem in darkest Africa will begin to slide more rapidly!

Look at SA's allies: Iran, Russia, Venezuela, Cuber, etc. etc.

Their photo ops are begining to look like a rogue's gallery!

What a dump this country has become. A recent poll showed that 67% of the populace favored a return to minority rule.

Every hour at LEAST one girl under 10 is raped and usually murdered.

Hamas and the SA of today belong together. SA is the Zimbabwe of the South.

Zimbabwe has been in economic decline since President Robert Mugabe began seizing white-owned farms in 2000.

So, blacks are not capable of growing wheat?

Let the Europeans take care of them. They live for this kind of problem.

I guess nobody could have forseen the consequences of turning over control of the farms to career soldiers.
