Harkin calls for troop pullout in Iraq

Iowa Senator Tom Harkin has called for the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq, saying it's the only solution after recent religious violence in that nation.

Harkin's comments place him among the first members of Congress to publicly state that the war in Iraq has become a fight between Muslim factions.

The criticism follows a CBS poll last week that showed 65 percent of respondents disapproved of President Bush's handling of the war, his worst marks since the war started three years ago.

A White House spokesman says retreat before victory would be reckless.

Its a guerilla war. This kind of war is alway a longer process because you don't have a government to beat into surrender. Would you have preferred that we levelled entire cities like Dresden and Berlin were?

If you look at trends they are distinctly positive. The Iraqi Army is getting more adept. There was a big capture of Al-queda yesterday 61 including some big fish.

I call for Harkin's withdrawal from the United States. We FReepers could get up a fund to charter a plane, or slow boat, to take Harkin, Baldwin, Streisand, Penn, and all others who want to leave to a destination of our choice. I choose New Guinea

It isn't going well. We are still taking battle casualties almost 3 years after the war. After WWII we occupied Germany, Italy and Japan and had 6 battle deaths for the whole year of 1946 in all theaters

Something is screwed up .

The difference is we were fighting countries using uniformed soldiers in battle. Countries have a hierarchy that can surrender. That means the fighting stops. If it doesn't the hierarchy could lose their lives. So they have a vested interest in stopping hostilities.

In Iraq it is guerrilla warfare; with our side in uniform and the other in civvies.

No one can surrender the guerrillas because someone else can start up the fighting anew.

The Saddamistas can quit, and Zarqawi can start it up again. Zarqawi can quit and Sadr can start it up again. The civilians will have to stop this fighting among themselves; if they are so inclined.

They are not fighting for family and country, they are having a religious squabbble of the worst kind. - tom
