WIGGINS, Colo. -- Three coaches at Wiggins High School have reportedly been suspended after one of them allegedly taped a student to a weightlifting bench for several hours as punishment for disruptive behavior, according to a broadcast report.
A coach with 30-years experience used athletic tape to restrain the 13-year-old boy, covering his eyes, mouth and whole body, according to the boy's mother Stacy Robinson. Coaches refused to untie the boy even after he urinated on himself, she said.
"(I'm) very angry, there is no excuse for this," said Robinson.
A coach who allegedly tied the boy and two other coaches who witnessed the incident have been suspended with pay, according to Wiggins school Superintendent Sharol Little.
"For this to happen is hard for all of us, so I guess I want to give some certainty and assurance to our parents that we're doing all we can with the facts that we have to make sure that it doesn't happen again," she said.
At least 60 people witnesses the incident.
"You always here stuff on TV about things like this happening to kids and you think there has got to be another side to this story, this kid has to be horrible for something like that to happen, the coach just snapped, that wasn't the case here," Robinson said.
I notice the only one commenting on the incident is the boy's mother. Wonder if his father is around?
Oh give me a freaking break, I'm pushing 50 and if this had happened to me when I was a kid, my dad would've been down there wanting to talk to this fellow. And he was a steelworker with thick biceps and an ill temper.
The doctor calmly told the woman that the child psychologist was, no doubt, enjoying life in some exotic locale off the profits of his book sales to young, uninformed mothers like herself, seeking to do the right thing.
Then the good doctor told the mother, "no doubt about it, that psychologist had never had children," and followed up with the most wonderful comment on spanking I have ever heard, "Madam, that psychologist never met your son and if he had, he would definitely spank him."
No? Say, a teenager ripped a piece of hard plastic and was trying to stab your son, and fighting the coaches with every bit of strength he had, would you not want him restrained for your child's safety, any way they could?
The answer to your first question is yes. I've seen it dozens of time in school and in 13 years in the Navy. I've been taped myself, and I've taped others. Your second question is stupid, so I won't answer it.
But again, that doesn't seem to be the case here as there is virtually no mention of the police being called because of this boys behavior.
Yup, you are right. I type "without" when I should have typed "with" -- fingers too fast this morning I reckon. Maybe I should grab more coffee so I can be accuarate as well :)
We need that coach at Git-mo. 60 witnesses, huh? Maybe he'd be better in the US Prison system.
ROTFL. Really? Just how was it 'stupid'? If you don't have an intelligent response, at least be adult enough to admit it.
And your (or my) dad would not have been charged, either.
I acknowledged that. I just think there is more (or less) to this story. We'll see.
You keep using a foolish analogy. Of course you have to restrain someone who is a danger. This incident is not about restraint. Don't you get that? Go back and read the account.
What?? I don't care WHAT the kid did--and I mean that completely. Even if he pulled out a gun that would not justify taping him to a bench for hours! In that case I could see restraining him until the police arrived, but taping him to a bench for hours to teach him a lesson?? No way, no how, and if the coach is convicted of this he should be fired and sent to jail.
"Ten years ago this wouldn't have been an outrageous event. Twenty years ago it wouldn't have even been remarkable.
"
What a crock! I'm 60 years old. I was 13 in 1959. Had a high school coach or gym teacher done something like this to me, my father would have seen to it that the teacher learned an immediate and lasting lesson.
I was a disruptive kid. Not mean, but not quiet, either. In fifth grade, a teacher got annoyed with me talking in class and picked me up out of my seat by my ears. He made an abject apology to me in the Principal's office after a visit from my father, who apparently explained that sending me to the Principal's office for talking out of turn was a more appropriate way to handle it. I wasn't there, so I'm not sure how he put it to that teacher, exactly, but his face was really pale while he apologized to me with my father and the Principal in the room.
Teachers do not assault children in this way. It is not allowed, and should never be allowed. I have no problem with corporal punishment in schools, and the paddle is a fine tool, in my opinion. But...taping a kid down to a weight bench, including his eyes and mouth? I don't think so. My father would not have just talked to a teacher who did such a thing. He took care of physically disciplining me, and did not allow that discipline to be done by anyone else.
You make my point. Looking at the kid, to me it looks like someone playing with duct tape. Another might see a different picture. What's the real story?
I am 100 percent for spanking. I don't think this situation equates with spanking. I'll rephrase what I said earlier about doing this for any reason, the only possible scenario I could see for doing this was if the kid was an imminent threat to somebody's life, and if that was the case it will come out as this is investigated. But mere disruption? No way. Shows to me that the coach is incapable of dealing with a situation other than with sheer force, and I don't think that's a positive.
