Three Coaches Suspended After Student Taped To Bench, 'Coach Just Snapped,' Mother Says

WIGGINS, Colo. -- Three coaches at Wiggins High School have reportedly been suspended after one of them allegedly taped a student to a weightlifting bench for several hours as punishment for disruptive behavior, according to a broadcast report.

A coach with 30-years experience used athletic tape to restrain the 13-year-old boy, covering his eyes, mouth and whole body, according to the boy's mother Stacy Robinson. Coaches refused to untie the boy even after he urinated on himself, she said.

"(I'm) very angry, there is no excuse for this," said Robinson.

A coach who allegedly tied the boy and two other coaches who witnessed the incident have been suspended with pay, according to Wiggins school Superintendent Sharol Little.

"For this to happen is hard for all of us, so I guess I want to give some certainty and assurance to our parents that we're doing all we can with the facts that we have to make sure that it doesn't happen again," she said.

At least 60 people witnesses the incident.

"You always here stuff on TV about things like this happening to kids and you think there has got to be another side to this story, this kid has to be horrible for something like that to happen, the coach just snapped, that wasn't the case here," Robinson said.

That is a valid question and I've been Googling to see if I could find out more on this case, but I haven't been able to, this report seems to be it.

I had not heard that one before:') This is just puzzling. Most of yall here would question anything the media prints and dig for the truth. It's just surprising to me that everyone has sided with a mother that has a kid with problems. There is usually 3 parts to a story. Your view, mine and the truth somewhere in the middle. If it happened as she said, I say shut the school down. Time will tell though.

Oh sure...the coach looked at himself in the mirror as he shaved and said, "I'm gonna tape a kid to a bench today".

Everyone knows that the news we're fed today is probably 50% bullsh*t.

I remember when coaches used to run it out of you by either doing sprints or laps. They also wouldn't just punish the disruptive individual, they would punish the whole class/team by making them all run. The innocent/non-disruptive kids would find a way to make sure the wiseass behaved.

You said: I would beat the hell out of a coach who did that to my son, whether he deserved it or not. And I would file charges with the DA.
***

That would likely be my reaction too. Then, the article might have read: "Father beats the hell out of coach." And one might ask, what did the coach do to deserve this? And someone else would post: I bet he deserved it. And someone else would say, no matter what the coach did, he didn't deserve to be treated like that.

My point? Maybe the kid DID do something deserving of getting taped to a bench. Maybe he did the same to a smaller kid, or maybe he beat up some kid, or maybe attacked the coach, and rather thank kick his sorry butt around the school, the coach restrained him. I don't know, and neither do any of the rest of us (although I'd like to know more). Maybe we all need a little more perspective before we judge this one.

So they taped his EYES and NOSE for his own good?

He could have died.

This "coach" should be in jail.

Sorry. I missed the "foolish" post. If you read the rest of mine you will see that I was asked if there was ever a reason to restrain a child and that I acknowledged I was not refering to this situation since I don't know what happened but just throwing out an example.

When I was a high school kid back in the early 60's, the Jesuits (Prefect of Discipline- Father Gordian)dispensed justice with a wooden paddle.

He was tough but fair and the student body loved him.

I am somewhere in the middle with this report. I agree that the coach should be suspended with pay following an investigation. However, IF it is proved that this coach (with or without help) did indeed tape this kid to a bench for several hours, there is NO justification for that act and I would expect the parent and school to operate within the bounds of the law. Certainly it would NOT be within the law to take the coach out and shoot him! Or to allow the father or another person to beat the crap out of him.

As a teacher I have a strict policy of NOT touching a student ever, for any reason, ever. That includes pats on the back or head, touching the arm or shoulder or face. The only thing I will do is shake hands or give a high five and that is only with kids I have a good relationship with.

That's sad that it has to be that way now, isn't it?

If a teenager came at a person with a dangerous object, he should indeed be restrained. But teachers are taught how to properly apply a 4 point restraint and how long it can be used. Taping a kid to a bench for hours does not meet that requirement

Of course, this assumes the story as told her is 100% correct. You have a good point in that we are hearing the mother's side only because the school cannot release information. What if the kid was not ducttapped but was put into a proper restraint and went home and fed his mom a line of bull? Could that happen? Oh man, every single day it could happen.

The kid had his EYES and MOUTH taped up for "several hours."

"SEVERAL HOURS"

No teacher or coach has the right to to this.

Do you also think that the woman in the new this week was right to keep her kids in a cage? Maybe they deserved that too?

There is only one scenario I can think of that would justify restraining the student in this way, and the student would have to be physically violent ( kicking , bighting, punching, looking for a blunt object weapon, trying to run his own head into a wall, .etc) and mentally out of control , restrained for his own safety, and a call in to the local police and state social services to come with a straight jacket.

I agree... not for hours on end in any case.

Uh huh. That is all I'm saying. I used to hate this suspended with pay stuff but I have seen so many good people be falsely accused of things , having to struggle to make ends meet until they are reinstated. I try now to encourage my bosses to suspend people with pay .

Colorado seems to have symtoms of an educational system melt down!

But this is a criminal offence according to law.

The school also is now open to a civil law suit of false imprisonment, and negligence.

Thanks for the smile. ;^)

OK, how about if he punched another kid? How about if he punched a coach? How about if he called another kid a racial slur? How about if he stole from his teammates?

Now go ahead and list all the appropriate approved punishments, because obviously the coach did something totally unconventional and used a physical punishment that appears no where in the handbook. But is it wrong, did the kid die or get injured, Does it really matter except as a lawsuit? Would the kid be better off arrested or thrown off the team?

I don't claim to know the answers.
