U.S.
Do you have any references or links? For what were they being drafted, neurosurgery or similar level of skill? I can't believe they were drafting them to be grunts.
It's also based on body fat compostition. The weight limit can be adjusted up, as well, based on the results of the tape test.
We have several guys who look like they couldn't make it, but they're just big. A tape test shows that even though they're over the height-to-weight limit, the weight is muscle mass, and not fat. Guys who work out a lot have that happen to them.
ok, i was just looking for way to possibly get more people in.
Once in boot, we have control over them and can MAKE them lose weight, thats all im saying. if someone is 10lbs over who cares, they will lose it during training.
They we're freeing up younger men in the rear.
No link. My dad told me.
In 1970, I was in Phu Loi,RVN and got to know the Doc at our aid station. He was a surgeon from Boston and was drafted.
He was 46 and very pissed off.
BULL
Go sit over there on that bench marked "Group W". NOW, kid!
There weight scale isn't that bad.
I'm 20 pounds over weight and I make it for a male over 40.
please raise the max age for enlistment to 59
You're mistaken.
yeah, the army has weird recruiting requirement with age Political Correctness ... & not to mention you can't go in the army if you have to take any hormonal medicine, but it is OK for the women to be on killer pills....
I'm 36. Missed my window to serve (family obligations, etc...) but I want to give back.
I already give money, but now I also have time. What volunteer groups exist to help vets & their families?
Can someone please point me in a good direction? I'd love to get more involved.
thanks!
Won't be long till he loses that attitude I hope...
..."but I guess the military isn`t looking for people just in great shape."
Probably kinda hard to find a 40-something who'll take orders from a 22-year-old 2LT (or a 25-year-old CPT).
Ping list for the discussion of the politics and social (and sometimes nostalgic) aspects that directly effects Generation Reagan / Generation-X (Those born from 1965-1981) including all the spending previous generations (i.e. The Baby Boomers) are doing that Gen-X and Y will end up paying for.
Freep mail me to be added or dropped. See my home page for details and previous articles.
That seems kind of dumb because people have different body types. I'm 5'10" and build solidly, my perfect weight for my body type is about 205 lbs. At 189 lbs I'd probably be too weak to even lift a rifle. Even when I was 17-20 years old and in awesome shape I couldn't hit that weight.
I think they could be losing good people with that requirement.

Also, contact your local VFW and if you have any Veteran's hospitals in your area, they are always looking for volunteers to spend time with patients.
What attitude do you hope he loses?
"By the end of WWII, they we're drafting 50 and 60 yr olds."
Like others have indicated, I've never heard or read that.
Do you have a reference?
My dad was too young for WWI and when WWII broke out, he was in his thirties and working as a laborer at Ford in Detroit. His plant started building airplanes and workers for the most part were exempt from the draft. He did tell me stories about how names were sent directly to the draft boards if a worker was habitually late for work or otherwise screwing up.
During World War II all men between 18 and 65 were required to register with selective service but only those 18 to 45 were liable for conscription.
