Prehistoric Milling Site Found in Calif.
Fri Mar 3, 6:24 AM ET
AZUSA, Calif. - Archaeologists excavating a housing development site found a prehistoric milling area estimated to be 8,000 years old, officials said.
Large arrowheads, hearths and stone slabs used to grind seeds and acorns were among the items found at the site at the base of the Angeles National Forest, according to archeologists from Cogstone Resource Management Inc.
No human or animal bones were discovered, the company said.
The consulting firm was hired by Azusa Land Partners, which is developing 1,250 homes on the 520-acre site. Workers removed and catalogued about 100 tools and implements used by the Gabrielino-Tongva tribe, which lived in the area before Europeans arrived, said Cogstone President Sherri Gust.
Archaeologists have known since the 1960s that the area contained artifacts, but the exact location of the milling site was not discovered until three weeks ago, Gust said.
Azusa is about 30 miles east of Los Angeles.
GGG Ping.
"used by the Gabrielino-Tongva tribe, which lived in the area before Europeans arrived"
Somebody better notify Kennewick man....:)
If there are any relatives of that tribe around they need to be fined and imprisioned. You can't have an industrial area anywhere in California--the pollution you know. Do you know how dangerous arrowheads are? People could be killed by arrowheads and spears and stuff like that. Too dangerous for California. These Indians should be fined into oblivion.
"These Indians should be fined into oblivion."
Or obsidian, or whatever. :)
estimated to be 8,000 years old...
My pastor says that the world is only 5,000 years old.
Wrong mill, but I'd love to have one.
Vertical or horizontal mills?
Probably some shapers too.
Columbus is not going to like this.
I was wondering if anyone would recognize it. One of the basic building blocks of American industry.
I have personally obtained radiocarbon dates a lot older than that.
> I have personally obtained radiocarbon dates a lot older than that.
Yeah, but does she put out on a first date?
That was my first thought - 8,000 years versus the clan that was sitting there in the 19th/20th centuries does NOT compute.
more important that any pastor, what does the bible say?
You know, archaeologists will date any old thing.
[No Helen Thomas pictures; we have our standards, plus our dinners, to keep!]
Not only that but all the fines and penalities for the unpaid payroll taxes....workman's comp...license fees...I'll stop now.
