Prehistoric Milling Site Found in Calif.

Fri Mar 3, 6:24 AM ET

AZUSA, Calif. - Archaeologists excavating a housing development site found a prehistoric milling area estimated to be 8,000 years old, officials said.

Large arrowheads, hearths and stone slabs used to grind seeds and acorns were among the items found at the site at the base of the Angeles National Forest, according to archeologists from Cogstone Resource Management Inc.

No human or animal bones were discovered, the company said.

The consulting firm was hired by Azusa Land Partners, which is developing 1,250 homes on the 520-acre site. Workers removed and catalogued about 100 tools and implements used by the Gabrielino-Tongva tribe, which lived in the area before Europeans arrived, said Cogstone President Sherri Gust.

Archaeologists have known since the 1960s that the area contained artifacts, but the exact location of the milling site was not discovered until three weeks ago, Gust said.

Azusa is about 30 miles east of Los Angeles.

I was raised in Azusa and spent half my life in Azusa-Glendora. As a kid I was probably all over the site. We roamed the whole area wherever there weren't homes, and there weren't too many except right in town.

If there are any relatives of that tribe around they need to be fined and imprisioned. You can't have an industrial area anywhere in California--the pollution you know. Do you know how dangerous arrowheads are? People could be killed by arrowheads and spears and stuff like that. Too dangerous for California. These Indians should be fined into oblivion.

My pastor says that the world is only 5,000 years old.

I was wondering if anyone would recognize it. One of the basic building blocks of American industry.

I have personally obtained radiocarbon dates a lot older than that.

That was my first thought - 8,000 years versus the clan that was sitting there in the 19th/20th centuries does NOT compute.

You know, archaeologists will date any old thing.
