FYI ping.
Nuts, I kind of wanted this place to be built, even though I am not Catholic.

His ideas about barring ... birth control, he said, apply only to the Catholic university. "There are a lot of misconceptions," Monaghan said Friday.

I really find all the coverage of this to be very Anti-Catholic.
What about Salt Lake, i.e., the Mormons, or the Orthodox who live in close communities?

Why back off? Stand up for your principles and give the ACLU a smackdown while you're at it.

"The misconception we're trying to clarify is that this is not going to be a strictly Catholic town. ... I think it would be boring if in fact it was all Catholic," Marinelli said. Italy is boring? Malta? Spain? Chile? Poland?

However, it will merely suggest, not prohibit, businesses from selling adult magazines or contraceptives. Never heard of Deed Covenants I guess.

The Clinton Administration had a different opinion of religious enclaves.

Monaghan said Friday in an interview with The Associated Press. "The town will be open to anybody."
Oh .... Drat!
I was hoping that I'd finally be able to get away from those hedonistic Mennonites.

Nuts, I kind of wanted this place to be built, even though I am not Catholic.Me, neither, and me, too. When I lived in a city, I chose a strong ethnic Catholic parish in which to raise my kid. There was a basic decency that was supported by the community.

Nuts, I kind of wanted this place to be built, even though I am not Catholic. Same here, even though I am not a believer. I like the idea of people using property rights, instead of simple majoritarian bullying, to build the kind of communities they want.

So the media lies about what the town is going to be, then when Mr. Monaghan actually SAYS what is going on, they claim he's 'backing down.' Typical.

Florida Attorney General Charlie Crist said he saw nothing in Monaghan's proposals that violated state law.Choke on it, ACLU!

The town is STILL going to be built! Ave Maria University broke ground last month on the Oratory, three of the University buildings, and three of the residence halls. I don't know when Barron Collier is going to start on the buildings surrounding the Oratory in the town square.
The media had made all kinds of claims about it being a 'Catholic only' town, when it was NEVER going to be that. Monaghan may have gotten ahead of himself talking about what might or might not be sold, but the whole idea is that he wants a town that supports traditional values.
