News sources have reported that President Bush lied when he said he wasnt warned that the levees in New Orleans could be breached during Hurricane Katrina.
But a videotape of a key meeting between Bush and hurricane officials supports the presidents contention that the breaching of the levees was unanticipated.
On September 1, four days after Katrina struck, Bush said: "I dont think anybody anticipated a breach of the levees.
The Associated Press on Wednesday claimed that "federal disaster officials warned President Bush and his homeland security chief before Hurricane Katrina struck that the storm could breach levees.
The Democratic National Committee attempted to make political hay out of the AP report, stating that "during the briefing, National Hurricane Center Director Max Mayfield told the president that the integrity of the levees was a very, very grave concern that the president appears to have ignored.
However, the tape shows that what Mayfield actually told Bush was: "I dont think any model can tell you with any confidence right now whether the levees will be topped or not, but thats obviously a very, very grave concern.
Mayfield told NBC News on Thursday that he warned only that the levees might be topped that is, the storm surge could push water over the top of the levees not breached, and that on the many conference calls he monitored, "Nobody talked about the possibility of a levee breach or failure until after it happened.
Mayfield even told Bush: "The forecast now suggests that there will be minimal flooding in the City of New Orleans itself.
The Washington Times, commenting on what it called a "hit job on the president, opined: "If it were true that Mr. Bush heard predictions of levee breaches before the storm hit, then that makes a despicable and costly lie of his statement four days after the hurricane.
"The truth, instead, is that no adviser warned the president of the possibility that the levees could fail. Of course, it makes a juicier story to suggest that the president was warned.
Yes, he didn't lie...But he failed to stop the hurricane...

The news media is so disconnected from reporting truthfully they have lost their ability to retain any credibility amongst educated folks. Their leftist agendas always pereate their "stories." Bloggers get the story "right" WAAAAAY more regular than so called "reporters," who never let truth or facts get in the way of a chance to bash the President.
bttt.
Another case of lying by the left and some in the MSM: making a KNOWN false statement (namely accusing Bush of a lie).
The MSM is at war with the President. They know what he was told and what he said. They think they can get away with it.
"The MSM is at war with the President....."
And they are winning. I know quite a few people who are buying the crap that MSM is selling.
CBS-NBC-ABC-CNN, The NY Slimes, The Washington Compost, etc, ad nauseum.... LIED!
This happened before........

NBC has topped the exploding truck story.
This is further proof of the media's election year attempt to dial every news story that impacts the Bush administration to a 10 on the hysteria scale and to paint it as being a negative for Bush, even when in fact it's a positive such as this story showing that in fact the administration was engaged and active in working this disaster. Instead, the media has misrepresented Mayfield's words and tried to turn this story which in fact makes Bush and Michael Brown look good into a negative.
This is in furtherance of what Daniel Henniger wrote in the Wall Street Journal about the media's "Calculated Outrage." Go here to read it. It's on their free site and is brilliantly insightful: http://www.opinionjournal.com/columnists/dhenninger/?id=110007980
Bush didn't lie...
Even if he was warned, what do they expect he'd have done -stuck his finger in it?
Good gravy. Topping and breaching are fundamentally different things. Clearly, no one did anticipate breaching, even if topping was a "grave concern." Once again, the liberal media distorts the FACTS.
But it was Bush's fault a barge slammed into one of the levees. I think he was steering (remotely) from a space satellite. He was in alien form at the time though, so no one would recognize him.
I know this because I read it on the internet.
Unfortunately, they can and do. Informed people know of their lies and disinformation, but the MSM is not after our vote. They are after the vote of the uninformed whose ears they will fill with propaganda. Think of the credence still given to anti-Bush writers who have been proven liars...no matter, the MSM still quotes them in their lies.
The MSM has deliberately equated the two ("top" vs. "breach") in order to "hit" Bush on this issue. Some conservative pundits should point this out.
Hannity and Rush were all over this today.
