California, which had a population of more than 37 million in 2005, had a net loss of 28,565 people to other states during the fiscal year that ended July 1, according to report estimates.
A department analyst said the loss can't be blamed on a mass exodus similar to one that the state experienced before the dot-com boom of the late 1990s.
Howard Roth, chief economist with the department, said California's housing costs discourage people from other states from moving here.
"The outflow hasn't changed much, but fewer people are coming here," Roth said. "Houses were already unaffordable, but they've become more so in the last two years. It's discouraging people from taking job offers in California."
According to DataQuick, the median price of a house in California was $452,000 in January. In the Bay Area, the median price was $607,000.

And when asked again why I replied
Not surprised except we have to get rid of Vilsack and replace him with Nussle/VP while we still have something left worthwhile.
Depending on the scenario you could have large sections of both areas more unihabitable than a lot of New Orleans after Katrina.
Also in today's economy location doesn't matter nearly as much for businesses; after 1906 there were compelling economic reasons for SF to be rebuilt, because you had to have a port and financial center near all those resources. But there's really no compelling reason for some big software company to be in Silicon Valley as opposed to, say, Atlanta. I suspect a lot of companies simply relocate their operations after a quake.
Even relatively recent immigrants from other countries are starting to leave in droves. They can't stand the anti family atmosphere and they, as a group well represented in small business, are being killed by all the regs and taxes.
Those who fail to appreciate the massive economies of places like Texas are essentially clueless.
Rio Rancho, NM. Their new home is almost finished. They're in their early 50's.
Actually, it's mostly us "cowboy hicks" who were here already when the freaks started taking over, who can't stand it any more.
Nice to have them here.
All those folks leaving Kalifornia to move to fly-over states are really Okies getting smart and returning to their roots!
California is very decentralized in a lot of ways and my impression is that their preparedness varies greatly from city to city.
And you have to keep in mind a lot of these realistic earthquake scenarios make Katrina look like a joke.
For example, the Hayward Fault earthquake scenario:
http://www.eastbayexpress.com/issues/2005-02-23/news/feature_1.html
Isn't some pie-in-the-sky 1 in 100,000 chance of happening in our lifeftimes fantasy scenario like a Supervolcanic eruption of Yellowstone; it's something that probably has at least an even chance of happening in the lifetimes of the people reading this thread.
Regarding resources, after one of these earthquake insurance will not exist in California unless it's subsidized federally by people elsewhere in the country. Eventually (after another couple hurricanes and maybe a couple quakes) people are going to take a real hard look at the economics of that.
Eventually due to the mobility of the population and economy I think you'll see a "bounce back' of people moving out of California AND places like South Florida as insurance becomes unavaliable against disaster in those places except for the exceedingly rich.
Interesting, and a good heads up
I have a CA real estate agent in the family, and these stories do not suprise me at all. I couldn't buy a 1-car garage in CA for the value of my "fly-over country" home.
Illegal immigration is a big part of the problem. So is the take over of the state by carpetbagger slicksters from the East Coast. Look at Barbara Boxer, Henry Waxman and Nancy Pelosi as examples. You'll also find lower levels of politics and the workplace to be filled with similar lib transplants.
THey are shocked that we pledge to the Texas Flag.
Really?? That's very cool, we still have to fight to get the CA schools to say the Pledge of Allegiance or have an American Flag in the classroom!!
Can't wait to convince my wife to move to Tesxas...
Since that article was written new evidence seems to indicate it's possible for the Rodgers Creek Fault to rupture along with the Hayward creating a massive 7.3 shock running all the way north of San Pablo Bay.
And also new paleoseismic evidence indicates the Rodgers Creek Fault is overdue.
Good news! How soon before Kalifornia's electoral count can be reduced?
The problem is many hippies, freaks and libs came here for school and in some cases work, during the late 1960s through the early 90s. Don't blame those of us who were here already. We used to be the majority - look at Reagan!
Well for sure, Meathead would do everything possible to defeat it.
Not around Austin. They've been ahead of that curve by about 25 years. They even make up beetles just to try to get areas off-limits to developers. My apartment manager just moved here from Orange County. Loves it. My ex-gf just moved back from Hermosa Beach. She hated the cost of living but loved everything else. But if you are looking for ex-Californians, you need to go to Nevada, Arizona and Colorado. They are getting overrun in those states.
