ALBANY, March 1 The Justice Department sued New York State on Wednesday for failing to overhaul its election system and replace its aging voting machines. It is the first lawsuit the federal government has filed to force a state to comply with the voting guidelines enacted by Congress after the 2000 election debacle.
The new federal guidelines were designed to prevent the kind of electoral chaos that marred the 2000 presidential election in Florida, and to make casting ballots easier for disabled voters. But New York State's efforts to modernize its election system have fallen far behind the rest of the nation, delayed by Albany's chronic gridlock and partisan bickering.
New York was supposed to create a statewide database of registered voters by Jan. 1 to make it easier to register and to detect fraud. It has not even come close to doing so, the lawsuit contends.
And while New York has accepted more than $49 million in federal aid to replace its creaky mechanical voting machines by this fall's elections, it has yet to tell localities what kinds of new voting machines will be acceptable.

Election officials say that they plan to model their statewide voter database which was supposed to be set up by Jan. 1 on a system used by the State of Washington.
The lawsuit notes that the state has yet to publish the rules governing how the database should be compiled. Nor has it begun seeking contractors to create the list, or established the technical requirements for the list.
Robert Brehm, a spokesman for the Board of Elections, said that the board believes it can have an interim voter database up and running by July or August, and have the final database ready in the beginning of 2007.

Impeccable timing with elections in November!
NY lives to steal elections.

"...creaky mechanical voting machines"
I never noticed them creaking, in fact, it has always been fun to vote. Pull the little levers down, then move the big handle and everything resets. What's wrong with that?
Of course there isn't any money to be made by using old machines that still do the job.

New Yorkers face another election with lever-action machines

I wrote this in my website in response to this other article
This my friends is what worries them the most. Compiling a centralized voting list
This is where the corruption has its source. New York, especially the city, rigs their lists, according to the lawsuits. They do this for two reasons: funding from Medicaid and representation in Albany. The lists are supposed to be Voter eligible, meaning US citizens of voting age.. The lists they have are Voter age, which includes all people of voter age regardless of their citizenship. Including non-citizens inflates their numbers so they can have more representation in Albany, and increases funding for Medicaid and other programs.
The machines we have work just fine the only thing I would change is having a stepstool for short people to make it easier for them to do "writeins"..
Change the apperance so people know what the ballot initivies are...
When I vote with the old machines I feel like I'm pulling the levers of gov't...
I wish the Feds could do something about all the voter fraud in dem states, including illegal aliens and the helping of demented voters in nursing homes.
I know what you mean.
...and those new, fancy-schmancy machines look like an ATM...
I agree, it is really time for the justice department to step in. This state is so out of control.
We have a plan that I need to discuss with as many NY freepers as possible.
Thing is it needs to be done out of a public forum.
Any ideas.... We can take things back. I will send you my email, we need help and this will work!
I'm not thrilled with any of them.
Read my reply in post 10..
I love NY voting machines. And they work. If it aint broke...
It's so embarrassing we can't get our act together on this. They just had a fair a few weeks ago for people to try out new machines and give their opinions. Representatives of the handicapped had problems with almost everything. I like our lever machines, and the little old ladies at the polls are meticulous about checking in the voters.
