Yikes if you're
"Wincing slightly from the .22-caliber rifle's recoil and piercing report" you've got a long way to go to get to a round worthy of self defense. The Boy Scouts have 10 year olds on the range with those.
That said I used to know a gun store owner who wore a .22 on his hip and asked him why a .22? He said, "I can pull this out and put 5 rounds exactly where I want them, and then if I need to, I can disappear behind that door and come out with something a lot worse."
I guess there's some point to that, but I just kept thinking, with the right round, you'll only need one.

you've never shot a good varmint load have you? .22lr or .223 might be next to nothing, but there are some varmint loads in 22calibre that'll poke a bit.

Sure, I've got 3 .22's and owned a mini-14 chambered in .223 for many years. Heck of a lot of difference between .223 and .22.
