I just don't see people who've refused to vote for moderate-liberal or liberal Democrats for the past four elections turning around and voting for an even more liberal Democrat, who supports racial quotas.
I know Clinton's popular in the Bay state, but I just can't envision an electorate that wouldn't vote for Edward Brooke-a relatively mainstream, black Republican-over John Kerry-a lackluster, uninspiring party hack-electing someone like Deval Patrick.
I could see him garnering the African-American vote, and very liberal, faux-Bohemian WASP types, but that seems like it would the be the limit of his popularity.
Ed Brooke lost to Paul Tsongas, after a messy divorce was sensationalized in the area news.
Kerry came in after Tsongas declined to run after his first bout with Cancer.

Paul Tsongas defeated Brooke in '78. He got cancer and had to quit. Kerry was elected in '84.
Part of the impeached POS's master plan is to get his cronies into office. Count on the clinton machine to provide Deval Patrick with megabucks and endless spin. Patrick is Harvard/Harvard and friend of teh POS since the 80s.
Massachusetts is not as hard-line liberal as it once was. But it is a one party state that happens to have chosen Republican governors since 1990. A three way race is a gift for Patrick.
