Bill Clinton (Bubba) helped Dubai on ports deal

Bill Clinton, former US president, advised top officials from Dubai two weeks ago on how to address growing US concerns over the acquisition of five US container terminals by DP World.

It came even as his wife, Senator Hillary Clinton, was leading efforts to derail the deal.

Mr Clinton, who this week called the United Arab Emirates a “good ally to America”, advised Dubai’s leaders to propose a 45-day delay to allow for an intensive investigation of the acquisition, according to his spokesman.

On Sunday, DP World agreed with the White House to undertake the lengthy review, a move which has assuaged some of the opposition from the US Congress.

However, Mrs Clinton remains a leading voice against the deal, and this week proposed legislation to block it, arguing that the US could not afford to “surrender our port operations to foreign governments”.

Mr Clinton’s spokesman said: “President Clinton is the former president of the US and as such receives many calls from world leaders and leading figures every week. About two weeks ago, the Dubai leaders called him and he suggested that they submit to the full and regular scrutiny process and that they should put maximum safeguards and security into any port proposal.”

He added that Mr Clinton supported his wife’s position on the deal and that “ideally” state-owned companies would not own US port operations.

Mr Clinton’s contact with Dubai on the issue underscores the relationship he has developed with the United Arab Emirates since leaving office. In 2002, he was paid $300,000 (€252,000) to address a summit in Dubai.

The backlash against Dubai’s takeover has seen some lawmakers in Washington highlight the UAE’s alleged role in helping to finance September 11.

Somebody in the press needs to ask willie if he is a paid lobbyist. Not that he would tell the truth anyway.

Same story, different source:

Bill swings hard to Port

Bill and Hillary Clinton seem to have the Dubai port controversy covered 10 ways from Sunday. Sen. Clinton is bashing the White House deal that would have the oil-rich United Arab Emirates - through the government-owned Dubai Ports World - running half a dozen major U.S. ports. Former President Clinton, however, is praising Dubai as an enlightened Arab nation and "a critical ally in the war on terror."

Does Bill have a less than altruistic reason to be pro-Dubai? Yesterday I asked his office if he helped recruit Dubai into a potentially lucrative partnership with Democratic fund-raiser Ron Burkle's private investment firm, Yucaipa.

The former President is a frequent visitor to Dubai, possibly on Burkle's 757 jet, is an occasional high-dollar lecturer there ($300,000 for a single speech), and serves on Yucaipa's board of directors.

A knowledgeable source speculates that billionaire Burkle pays his close friend seven figures - and possibly even an equity stake - for his advice and hard work. That might take the pressure off Hillary to support the Clintons' households.

Since last fall, according to news accounts, Yucaipa and government-owned Dubai Investments have jointly bid on the commodities broker Refco, Inc., and the Albertson's grocery chain. No deals yet.

Spokesmen for Yucaipa and the Clintons refused to comment on the Clinton-Dubai connection, and the former President's office pointed me toward Hillary's Senate financial disclosure statements - with the relevant one expected to be filed in a couple of months.

Well, that just goes to verify what I've been saying about this overblown demagogery from the start. It's nothing more than a classic political shakedown. The administration ok'd this deal without Congress, and Congress wants a piece of the action. At the end of the day, after they have been suitably lobbied by Bob Dole and the other lobbyists hired bu the Emirs, Congress will do nothing. At least many of them will get some laundered campaign cash. What will all the yahoos who put their faith in Hillary to kill this deal get? Suckered again by the irrepressible, irreversible tide of globalization, that's what. And it is exactly what they deserve.

Wish I could believe that but unfortunately I think we are ALL suckered by our representation regardless of party and I wonder what we any of us did to deserve this?

"The Monster with Two Backs" is really giving him a going over now, while the "Brown Bombers": `Jesse the Jackass' and 'The Sharpster' are frantically motioning for George to tag them, but he's still going through the `Publics' pockets . . . the `Public's' out for the count now . . the claret is really flowing now ladies and gentlemen, won't somebody stop this?
Now "Cankles" has clubbed the ref and grabbed the mike . . that's the end of Round One.
Now stay tuned for a message from our sponsor, CAIR:
"If you are drinking a beer, a tree calls to us: "Oh, brother find this infidel and kill him."
Round Two! The "Brown Bombers" appear to be preaching to the crowd while passing a collection plate . . .

I wonder what any of us did to deserve this?

Nothing except resist natural law. I don't feel the least bit victimized because I recognize that the forces propelling the world toward globalism are no more reversible than the forces propelling me toward inevitable death. I can do nothing to stop such forces, so I resign myself to accepting reality as I find it, and put no faith in politicians who try to demogogue me into relinquishing some of my personal sovereignty to them, that they may save me. I choose to save myself, thank you very much.

Al Qaeda and protectionists are on the same quixotic journey, trying to preserve what they see as their cultural purity in the face of global intrusions. They will fail as certainly as the Soviets, and every other civilization that tried to wall itself off, has failed.

The solution is not to depend on politicians for your security and well-being. Be a conservative. Be self-sufficient. Those of us who are self-employed recognize that when the environment changes we have to adapt. If I have to adapt, then ultimately my employees and family must adapt. What makes anyone think they can be immune? That is what is beyond my comprehension.

I KNEW it .. I knew he would be inserting himself in this!!! I said last week when he was there speaking at American University in Dubai about his Clinton Foundation Scholars Program (and trying to get on the elite golf links) that I wouldn't be surprised if he was schmoozing ... and probably with his hand out for $$ for his "colleague's" campaign warchest. He could be acting as a stealth lobbyist everywhere he goes these days, for all we know. Damm his soul!

Also, his wife got a letter from an Israeli firm on Feb. 22nd, saying that they do business with DPW...in Dubai...

BUT, does she reveal that, when she went in front of the committee investigating this??? NOOOO......

BUT, she comes out AGAINST it...

Starwise, what does it tell you about our country, that these two are "rock stars" wherever they go??

Bill and Hill must be the one/two punch. Privately he's for it and gives the missus a platform while publicly fighting against it.

This couple is an army within themselves waging a war against America and her allies.

Willie Sutton was once asked why he robbed banks. He answered: "Because that's where the money is."

It is the availability of fast cash that makes Dubai act as a magnet for politicians and business leaders.

Influence-building is a normal part of this hybrid Free Market in Dubai---and the rest of the Middle East.
