Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay faces a stiff re-election battle in Texas. Some political analysts say he`s not even a safe bet to win Tuesday`s Republican primary, in which he faces three challengers.
If he survives, he will square off against former Democratic Congressman Nick Lampson in November.
DeLay, once one of the most powerful politicians in Washington, is fighting a criminal indictment and links to the Jack Abramoff corruption scandal.
DeLay resigned from his leadership post in January.
He has denied doing anything wrong and says the allegations against him are politically motivated.
His rivals say DeLay`s tough tactics are simply catching up to him. For example, one of his top challengers in the Republican primary is Tom Campbell, who used to support DeLay.
Campbell says he doesn`t agree with DeLay`s, quote, "win at any cost version of slash-and-burn politics." Lampson, a Beaumont native, calls DeLay a "bully" and says voters have gotten tired of his style.
Ping
Delay in a landslide.
You betcha! And he has character, too!
Tom Delay also has character.
Why do you think he has been such a target?
Gee, how did I know you posted this by just reading the headline?
My vote is going to Campbell
Will you vote for DeLay in the general election?
No. If he wins I win skip that election, I refuse to vote for a free traitor.
Lucky Guess?
Perhaps, just not the kind of character I want in my elected officials. Start here and continue reading. DeLay gave two mutually exclusive statements under oath. One of them has to be false. I don't support people who tell false statements under oath. Yes, many Republicans may, but I have higher standards than those Republicans and a majority of Democrats.
Why do you think he has been such a target?
GOP voters in TX22 expect the highest ethical standards in their elected officials.
Threads have been bookmarked so I can serve it to you when DeLay wins.
Do educate me. How is he guilty of being a traitor?
He supported nafta and cafta. He is a free traitor.
Campbell's your typical GOP party hack, inserted at the last minute because the GOP panicked and is too afraid to stand up for DeLay.
Campbell may win but he'll be about as effective as a Republican Congressman as the U.N. Security Council.
Give me a break. If you oppose DeLay based on this, then you clearly got issues.
I know it's a longshot to beat such an entrenched incumbant. But I admire Tom Campbell. He has mondo cajones.
And I can be certain that I voted for integrity.
I do have issue with trade treaties that hurt the middle class like nafta and cafta.
