It appears that every other day there's a new poll released on President George Bush's job approval rating. The majority of these polls or surveys are conducted by news organizations or polling companies contracted by news organizations. Many American's believe these poll results are accurate and still trust the news organizations to conduct them fairly.
However, the blogosphere and talk radio uncovered a bit of hanky-panky going on at CBS once again. No, they didn't use forged documents again -- and those responsible for the use of fraudulent memos used to damage the Bush presidency are gone from CBS News, including Mary Mapes and Dandy Dan Rather.
This time we're talking about a CBS poll that showed President Bush's approval rating at an all time low of 34%. For the last few months, American's were fed a steady diet of bad news regarding Bush or members of his administration. From torture to spying to an accidental shooting to the Dubai ports controversy, there's never a shortage of news stories that show the President of the United States in a less than favorable light.
And so most people will accept without question the results of this latest poll even if it does come from the obvious Bush-haters at CBS News.
So, in an effort to turn the findings of bloggers and talk hosts, who caught CBS monkeying with the poll numbers, into a non-story, they decided to "out" themselves on their website, albeit in the guise of explaining how polls are conducted.
CBS News explained to readers what most pollsters do when they conduct their telephone surveys, and then they dropped this little bomb in the midst of their explanation: Bush's favorability poll was weighted in favor of Democrats.
Bush's 34% approval rating is a result of polling 37% Democrats, 28% Republicans and 35% other or independents. One can only imagine the affiliations of that 35%. Are they Libertarians? Socialists? Communists? Are some extreme right-wing militia-types, who hate Bush as much as the left?
But just the divide between Democrats and Republicans is noticeably suspect. Nine percent fewer people who identified themselves as Republicans were polled. That is far from insignificant when one realizes "the other or independent" respondents are 7% higher than the Republican respondents, as well.
Also, the poll fails to differentiate between registered voters, likely voters or people who don't even know they can vote. Does CBS or their pollsters screen these respondents in the Independent category? How many are registered with the Green Party, Libertarian Party, Socialist Party, Reform Party, Liberal Party or Conservative Party, and how many are truly independents?
Granted, there are no perfect polls, but a poll released by CBS News is always deserving of further scrutiny
Indians Have Favorable Opinions on U.S. & President Bush
A Pew Global Attitudes survey conducted in India found that about seven-in-ten (71%) have a favorable view of the United States. 54% say they have a lot or some confidence that Bush will generally do the right thing in world affairs.
This report was assailed by CBS News as inaccurate, even if not fake by Phil Lacious, head of the network's Center for Bogus Stories. "This report is based on raw Q & A responses," said Lacious. "No one has smoothed the data or made adjustments for bias. So, while technically these data are not fake, their failure to correspond with what we've been reporting indicates that they cannot be accurate."
Lacious vowed that CBS would conduct its own survey. "We've already lined up several experts who know what Indians really think," said Lacious. "With a little effort and creativity we will be able to portray a much more accurate representation of Indian opinion."
Lacious boasted that the CBS survey would also be more cost-effective because all the work would be done in the U.S., thus avoiding any travel expenses.

AFFIRMATIVE POLLING
I had to laugh today though. Zogby came out with a poll asking merely the same question (topic was Iraq pullout, polling U.S. soldiers in Iraq), with 5 answers, and John Zogby and the MSNBC anchor at the time (don't know his name, but he looked like a prissy-boy cookie-cutter news guy) were pouring over the results. Each answer had percentiles in the 20 percent range, and they falsely claimed that close to 80% of the service members thinks we should get out of Iraq now.

He coined that phrase yesterday and you're right, it is accurate. Even the way he describes how the media goes around looking for large crowds of people to shower their ammunition into is accurate.

Sounds like the Johns Hopkins study which said 101,000 Iraqis died due to the U.S. invasion...plus or minus 98,000.

The media has fit Pulitzer's description (above) for decades, and that's why people vote for unqualified and corrupt candidates such as Kerry, Gore, Kennedy, Hillary Klinton, et cetera. Fortunately, the voters haven't bought into all the media's propaganda, and the media is losing credibility so fast it has very little remaining. Cancel all subscriptions, shut off the TV.
Rush is getting stooped shouldered and hump backed from carrying water for the White House on the port issue.

Not surprisingly, the rest of the media continue to report this bogus 34% figure as if it were correct.

Kerry Tops Bush In CBS Poll
NEW YORK, Feb. 16, 2004
(CBS) Americans’ continued worries about jobs and the economy, along with a decreasing belief that Iraq posed an immediate threat to the U.S., has weakened what had been strong support for George W. Bush, and given his Democratic opponents an advantage -- at least for now. Most Americans also believe the Bush Administration exaggerated the pre-war intelligence about Iraqi weapons, and that Bush's self-described status as a "war President" was brought on by his own choices, not forced upon him by world events.
Registered voters now give a five-point lead to an unnamed Democratic candidate over George W. Bush. By 47 percent to 42 percent registered voters now say they would support a Democrat over the Republican President.

Poll: Iraq Taking Toll On Bush
NEW YORK, May 24, 2004
(CBS) Growing public concern about the war in Iraq, the coming handover of power to Iraqis on June 30, and the prisoner abuse scandals there, have taken their toll on evaluations of President George W. Bush. And the last few weeks have provided no good news on the domestic front: Americans have lackluster expectations for the economy, and the new worry of rising gas prices. The President’s approval rating has dropped to a new low of 41 percent, and more than six in ten say the country is heading in the wrong direction.
There is another good reason for the President’s series of speeches on plans for Iraq, the first of which takes place tonight. Even though opinions of Bush’s Democratic challenger, Senator John Kerry, haven’t changed much, Bush’s troubles have given Kerry a clear lead in the horserace -- if the November election were being held today. Independent voters seem to have been especially affected. Overall, 49 percent of registered voters now say they would vote for Kerry, 41 percent for Bush.
CBS lied? No way.
Its getting tiresome.
