CNN) -- President Bush said in a Tuesday interview that he wasn't concerned about his low approval ratings, and he discussed how he told Vice President Dick Cheney, who was shaken by his hunting accident earlier this month, to "share it with the American people."
"If I worried about polls, I wouldn't be doing my job," Bush told ABC's Elizabeth Vargas in the interview, which aired on "World News Tonight."
The president's approval rating dropped to 34 percent in a CBS News poll released Monday. CNN/USA Today/Gallup polls taken since October have put his approval ratings in the high 30s to mid-40s.
"I fully understand that when you do hard things, it creates consternation at times," Bush said. "I've been up in the polls, and I've been down in the polls -- it's just part of life in the modern era. I think the American people -- I know the American people want somebody to stand on principle, make decisions and stand by them and lead this world toward a more peaceful tomorrow, and I strongly believe we're doing that. And I enjoy it. It's a fantastic opportunity."
He also said he feels he has "ample capital" despite his sagging polls.
The president also defended Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, who has faced criticism -- and calls for his resignation -- over the federal government's response to Hurricane Katrina.
"He's doing a fine job," Bush said. "I also know he's willing to accept criticism and respond." Bush added that he didn't think Chertoff would try to resign.

I don't know? My bottomline feeling on this one is, we're very possibly going to have some type of attack in this country... Small scale, large scale, whatever... And in my opinion, somehow coming in through our ports is a damn good possibility as to how that may happen, no matter who is running what show with regards to the ports...
If we get hit somehow through the ports, NO MATTER WHAT, OR WHO THE FAULT LIES WITH, republicans will have an unwinnable time convincing the American people that we are tougher than democrats on national security... That's when we will lose an enormous amount of advantage....

Bush is clearly keeping the long haul in mind and is far more concerned about tomorrows tomorrow being safe for democracy and not the MSMs "have you stopped beating your wife" attitude toward him.
The CBS poll's a fraud, something like 25% Republicans. Rassmussen has him at 43, down 5 from where he was holding for weeks.
We have depended on Arab oil forever, but never had a president with closer personal ties with those Arabs. It is this which I find so disturbing.
They do a hell of a lot more than hold hands in that "culture".
Anyway, Bush has capital left. He just got a Supreme Court Justice approved, despite the bigotry of the left.
However, he did recently fumble away some of his cache with this DPW deal.

Yes and Bush also has no need to use the bully pulpit to counter attacks against him, get out in front of attacks coming against him or explaining his agenda. Instead, Bush can rely on his new, secret telepathic powers where the voters will just mysteriously get it and understand where he is coming from. /sarcasm
