Senate Coverage -- (March '06)
Thomas ^ | 3-1-06 | US Congress

Since "Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.", I and others think it's a good idea to centralize what the goes on in the Senate (or House).

So if you see something happening on the Senate/House floor and you don't want to start a new thread to ask if anyone else just heard what you heard, you can leave a short note on who said what and about what and I'll try and find it the next day in THE RECORD. Or if you see a thread that pertains to the Senate, House, or pretty much any GOV'T agency please link your thread here.

If you have any suggestions for this thread please feel free to let me know.

Here's a few helpful links.

C-SPAN what a great thing. Where you can watch or listen live to most Government happenings.

C-SPAN 1 carries the HOUSE.

C-SPAN 2 carries the SENATE.

C-SPAN 3 (most places web only) carries a variety of committee meetings live or other past programming.

OR FEDNET has online feed also.

A great thing about our Government is they make it really easy for the public to research what the Politicians are doing and saying (on the floor anyway).

THOMAS where you can see a RECORD of what Congress is doing each day. You can also search/read a verbatim text of what each Congressmen/women or Senator has said on the floor or submitted 'for the record.' [This is where the real juicy stuff can be found.]

Also found at Thomas are Monthly Calendars for the Senate Majority and Senate Minority

And Monthly Calendars for the House Majority and Roll Call Votes can be found here.

Did you guys hear when Diane started her speech, she referred to the illegals..saying they came here LEGALLY...

Well...some may have with green cards, but have overstayed their time...and I BET, she overestimates the ones that "legally" came here.

Frist did it also...we need to call their offices and tell them to STOP the sob stories..

BTW..I saw threads that were HAILING Frist...wanting HIM for POTUS, betcha they don't feel that way after this speech though.

So now they are voting on Frist's amendment asking for a report on border deaths. I am not sure what the purpose of that is. Maybe to make us feel sorry for these people. (In a way I do, but I still don't want them coming here.)

I wondered what kind of vote it was when the DEMS were voting AYE...I knew it couldn't be the one for Frist's so-called Border Control Bill...

I just got off the phone with my brother who lives in NC

He said there is only one INS office to get immigration documents from in all of North Carolina

Is that true?

Indiana only has 6 INS agents from what I have heard. Can't speak to North Carolina.

Not much has been going on...just Senators loving to hear themselves talk...and telling sob stories about illegals that are SO grateful to be here.

BTW...Dorgan is up now, purposely LYING about what President Bush has suggested...

He is saying that Bush wants to form a "guest worker program" above and beyond the 20 million illegals that are here...

NO, Dorgan, Bush is saying that the ones that are HERE can go back to their country and then apply for the guest worker program..

Dorgan is saying it defies common sense...well, of course it does...but lies and distortions usually DO!!!

LOL, thanks for the update. I swear all this is enough to make me want to quit being political again. It would be so easy to go with the right on this, but I just can't.

NO!! Don't go to far right....you would have to wave at me.

I am not RIGHT...but, I am not happy with all of the illegals either..

Perhaps if you lived in Texas, you might feel a little less "left" than you do now.

I know that I would---because when I lived in Colorado, years ago---and then moved to Texas...it was like moving to a different country.

I am SO GLAD that Inhofe is going to have an amendment making English "the official language of America"...

I can't believe we have to do that---I am just curious WHO would vote against it, though.

I realize that we don't border Mexico, but we have had such an influx here that we had to build another church just for them! We need Spanish speaking priests. We are being impacted as well. We have groceries and restaurants popping up here all over the place. So maybe the volume is not huge yet, but they are making their way here, we are surrounded by farms. The migrants have been here for years. They pick our beans and tomatoes, etc. I am not totally clueless. Our landscapers are all Hispanic. Social Service agencies are begging for Spanish speaking people to help them. To bad I am not fluent, I could have my choice of jobs.

I am against bilingual education for English speaking kids. But we need to find a way to assimilate the Spanish speaking kids into the school system until they learn English and I am not sure how to do that, except to hold them back a few grades like they did in the old days when kids showed up at school that did not speak English.

Its called the "immersion method"...and from what I hear, it is the ONLY method that truly works...

If those students are FORCED to sit in classed where only English is spoken, they will HAVE to learn it.

When I took French, my teachers only spoke French to us, and so we HAD to study it find out what they were saying.

It is kind of like quitting smoking..the ONLY way that works is to quit----it is awful for a while...but it does work.

Just like unwanted pregnancy, AIDS, STDS...only way to be SURE you are safe is abstinence...nothing wrong with abstinence.....my generation may have been the last one---but it was ASSUMED that you remained a virgin until marriage..and anyone who slept around was considered a ______.

I know I am probably mixing apples and oranges here...but, it seems like the simple answers are most often the most effective...and CHEAPER.

Mixing apples and oranges or not, I understand what you are saying. In the old days I know that the parents rarely mastered English, but their children did and that helped.
