The Associated Press reported yesterday that Sunni Arabs in Iraq are prepared to end their boycott of talks to form a national unity government, thus disappointing yet again those journalists who've been telling us for two years civil war is imminent. It seemed last Wednesday as if the pessimists might finally be right after terrorists destroyed the Golden Mosque in Samarra, one of the holiest sites in Shia Islam. Shia militias attacked more than a dozen Sunni mosques in retaliation. An unprecedented three day curfew was imposed in Baghdad in order to curb sectarian violence in which more than 100 people were killed. The outbreak of violence convinced conservative icon William F. Buckley Jr. that the U.S. mission in Iraq has failed. .."Our mission has failed because Iraqi animosities have proved uncontainable by an invading army of 130,000 Americans,"... Mr. Buckley wrote in National Review. "The great human reserves that call for civil life haven't proved strong enough." Mr. Buckley is of the "realist" school of foreign policy, which believes, in essence, that "freedom and democracy are for me, but not for thee." The lesser breeds without the Law, like Iraq's Arabs, aren't ready for it now, and probably won't be ever. Buckley noted with apparent approval the view of an anonymous soldier quoted in the New York Times who said he can understand why Saddam Hussein was needed to keep the Sunnis and Shiites from each other's throats. Mr. Buckley's pessimism may be premature. Both Sunni and Shia religious leaders have called for calm. The Moqtada al Sadr, whose militia was in the forefront of the retaliatory attacks on Sunni mosques, prayed publicly Saturday with the Sunni Association of Muslim Scholars. Thousands of ordinary Sunnis and Shias joined together in half a dozen Iraqi cities to demonstrate for peace.

Fyi..
Geez! What will it take for us journalists to start a civil war over there? Aren't they listening? Maybe we should do a CBS poll (of terrorists) to get them to admit that a civil war is inevitible! It's so hard to be an objective liberal journalist that hates Bush enough to want America to lose these days.
It will be time to worry when journalists (out of desperation) start carrying guns ... to make news.
"The outbreak of violence convinced conservative icon William F. Buckley Jr. that the U.S. mission in Iraq has failed...."
Mr. Buckley also said " Ahhhhhhh the centraaaaal impediment to peace in that part of the world is the lack of centrafudically biconstratated hydropophhracy. Which therefore contributes to the propossible abernathy of the edish!"
Thanks for your usual spot on analysis of world affairs Bill. You'll be getting an extra fruit cup at bingo night.
I don't know, they may get their wish. I just saw on the news today that the Sunnis are forcibly evicting the Shiites. That can't be going over very well.

FYI...interesting take alongside your column on Chrissy..
I was about to accuse you of demagoguery for using the plural, "trucks" as if it had been an everyday occurance rather than a one-time thing. But in reading the link, it seems like there were two trucks involved. In any event, we can agree that journalism is the business of attracting attention with topical nonfiction for fun and profit. No matter how fictional some of the "nonfiction" turns out to be . . .
There is some evidence to support the Sunni claim.
If that were proven, it could be the key to the whole problem! Imagine trying to explain that to your people back home in Iran!
Just look at the cover of the latest issue of Time magazine and the articles. They are practically begging for a civil war among Iraqis. Not to mention, every article, cartoon, quote and op/ed is anti-Bush.
It is troubling to have our mililtary personnel, for good and sufficient reason ordered to be apolitical, taking positions on politics. But what is the alternative, if military personnel perceive that"Nearly every Iraq story is inaccurate," wrote Ben Connable, a Marine major stationed in Fallujah, in an email to a friend. "The numbers are inflated, the damage exaggerated . . ." ?
The systematic intent of the Jane Fonda/John Kerry/Dan Rather Democratic Party is to politically divide the country and the military. Journalism (and the rest of the Democratic Party) takes the position that journalism is the only thing between the military and a WWI-style quagmire. The lesson of Vietnam is that journalism which politicizes truth makes it impossible for the military to stay out of politics and still retain its honor. IMHO it is the responsibility of the president to defend the honor of the military agressively under that circumstance. Broadcast journalism depends on the government for its existence, and the government must not allow a reprise of Vietnam/Watergate.
In addition, I believe that despite the 'we support the troops' mantra from just about every Democrat, the fact is ....they do not.
Additionally, it benefits the Democrats when the media successfully cause the public to "turn" against the troops / war effort, who traditionally are more conservative in nature (God, country and apple pie).
Irregardless the cost, (including American lives) the Democrats are invested in defeat .... of the COUNTRY
