I was listening to a talk show in Denver on my way home yesterday, and they had an undercover cop on who poses as young kids on myspace. He said within minutes of posting a new profile, whether he poses as boy/girl he is contacted by men.

Have these creeps always been around or is our society creating them?

The parents are too busy making money to monitor their kid's Internet use.

Myspace is interesting on account of the bands on it. You can find bands you wouldn't normally be exposed to. Other than that I don't like it nearly as much as Facebook for meeting people.

How about email, a cell phone, or even a land line? All of those allow children to give out information. This current furor over myspace is all brought about by a bunch of local news stations doing dateline style "ban this" stories for worried soccer moms.

Myspace isn't going to get your child killed. The child is more likely to die on a school bus careening over a cliff into a giant ice cream cone.

The operative word here is "knowingly." Even fairly knowledgeable parents can't keep track of everything a teenager does every waking moment of the day, unless they are going to follow her around 24-7. This does not mean that they are too busy, don't care, or are off making money. Even if they ban such sites from their own home, kids can access sites like that at their friends' houses, at the library, or any other place where one can connect to the Internet.

Why would any parents permit their kids to have cellphones, wireless text messaging devices, webcams, or a Yahoo/AOL Instant Messenger account? Or even cable tv in their bedrooms?

Really there is no difference.

There are over 50,000,000 Myspace accounts. Initially all users were over 18 and while some make use it as a pick up joint, the overwhelming majority of people I know DO NOT add people they don't already know socially (and I exclude friends of friends who I'd never want to be associated with). I know married couples, business owners, and countless others who use it for promotion, to share jokes, or network. They aren't swingers.

From what I hear, kids all over this country are on myspace.com.

How can you prevent it? My daughter is in college and uses it. Thankfully, it wasn't around when she was in high school. But even at her age, she knows that I check it and I've also asked her to change some things (she revealed where she worked, for example). I'd prefer she wasn't on there at all. But even the most careful parents of high school children can't prevent determined children from getting on. Parents need to find out what's there and surf.

Myspace is not the problem. People are the problem.

Or should we ban guns, too?

There are a lot of normal, decent folks on MySpace. There are some creeps.

Just like ANYWHERE on the net.

Just this evening, cBS had an exclusive of a 50 yr man in Ventura being arrested in an early morning raid. He bragged online about sexual activity with young girls. Of course guess where he posted, besides Yahell? Myspace.com. He was married, a valued employee, beautiful home, but led a secret life. They showed his wife in the garage with a sweater over her head. She didn't have a clue.

Let me tell you something about that site. It is poorly policed. My bf's 11 yr old son has a profile up, with rude comments. This is his mother's doing. The middle daughter now lives with her aunt who removed her profile immediately upon gaining custody. She's 13. The oldest is 17 and brainwashed into thinking it's all in good fun. Bf doesn't have much legal influence...yet. I don't want to jinx anything.

People have said that myspace.com has a right to exist, and that it is the fault of parents for not paying attention. I don't know about that. Kids are sneaky.

Why are you blaming one particular application of one particular technology, instead of the stupid people using it? Might as well blame the printing press for Hustler magazine.

I just found my girlfriend's daughter. She's 12. Her profile said she was 24. Thankfully, no pictures or personal info. I'm going to call her mom tomorrow. I'm sure she's on more than one of these kinds of sites. Creepy!

what's wrong with MySpace? It's just a blog host. It's no different from the gazillions of other blogs out there, just happen to be one that's popular with teens ... they'll probably move to Facebook once they get to college.

Teens are also heavy users of IM and SMS. And also IRC in some places (and you should see some of the undesirable types hanging out on IRC channels). All the big and popular IM's also support personal blog linking and hosting.

The user choose the technology, the technology itself is user agnostic.
