Well, except for William Henry Harrison who served a total of about 40 days, Virginia has ALWAYS produced spectacular presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, Zachary Taylor, John Tyler, Woodrow Wilson.,

He is a governor from a "Red state" and can pass himself off as an "old time conservative Democrat" ala Zell Miller. If Warner is the nominee, he will probably be the next President. Too many old people in the South that will vote for him because they will see him like the Democrats they voted for 50 years ago.

"They think he can win in the south."

And if you combine him with Richardson, and they can pull off Virginia and New Mexico and everything stays the same, this election is going to the House.

"Well, except for William Henry Harrison who served a total of about 40 days, Virginia has ALWAYS produced spectacular presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, Zachary Taylor, John Tyler, Woodrow Wilson.,"

Didn't Zachary Taylor serve only a year or so? He was the epitome of an "empty suit." He had no agenda, no opinions on the issue, he was just a famous name who was viewed by those in power as electable.

Tyler, who replaced Harrison, became president by accident, alienated congress and succeeded in hightening regional tensions.

If it comes down to Warner v. Allen, I think Allen wins regardless of what polls now say. In a presidential election, Virginians will begin associating Warner with all the elements of the Democratic party they don't like.

Er, Virginians prefer to put it this way:
Well, except for William Henry Harrison who served a total of about 40 days, Virginia has ALWAYS produced spectacular presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, Zachary Taylor, John Tyler... [embarassed throat clearing]....

I think they think he can win the Midwest and some of the Mountain states (Colorado, New Mexico, maybe Arizona) while only keeping the South competitive. I doubt any Democrat can win in the south any more, except maybe Florida and we all know that's only because of the non-southern bits.

Correct. Taking office in 1849, Taylor died in Washingon in the mist of fighting against the Compromise of 1850. Taylor had began a long campaign against appeasing the South and, therefore, alienating his Southern roots, so his courage and statemanship ranks him among the good presidents even though he served barely 18 months.
Tyler, the opposite of Taylor in his regional patriotism for Southern cause, is considered a good president because he eventually got the annexation of Texas into the U.S.

Worst presidents, IMHO, (in order of best to worse) George H.W. Bush, LBJ, Richard Nixon, U.S. Grant, Herbert Hoover, Jimmy Carter, Millard Fillmore, Bill Clinton, Warren Harding, James Buchanan, Franklin Pierce

Her Royal Highness is a heap big trouble. Democrats are Poll Whores and she is NOT polling well nationally.

The way things are going now, someone like Warner could definitely win the presidency.....if nominated.

Fortunately for us, Hillary Clinton is looking like a very strong bet to get the Democratic nomination. She'll raise far more money, has an even more extensive national network, and is owed more favors than Bush 2000 ever had, and we saw how easily he swamped that field. It's going to be very hard for any Democrat to defeat Hillary.

The good news for us is she's a terrible national candidate. Her negative ratings are already too high to win, and a presidential candidate's negatives don't go down over the long haul of a campaign. We just need to find an acceptable candidate and we'll beat Hillary.
