TIKRIT, Iraq, Feb 28 (Reuters) - A bomb attack on Tuesday badly damaged a small mosque shrine Saddam Hussein had built over his father's grave, police and local officials said.

The officials, confirming earlier reports of blasts at the site by residents, said bombs were planted at the shrine at dawn.

Mosque where Saddam's dad is buried bombed

TIKRIT, Iraq (AP) — A bomb exploded Tuesday at the mosque where Saddam Hussein's father is buried in northern Iraqi, police said.

The blast damaged a dome and blew out windows and doors at the Hussein al-Majid mosque, but caused no casualties, police Capt. Qais Abdul-Majid said.

The attack came less than a week after a revered Shiite shrine was destroyed in the central city of Samarra, triggering a wave of reprisal attacks against Sunni mosques. Shiite leaders blamed Saddam loyalists and Sunni-led insurgents for the destruction of the Askariya shrine Wednesday.

Saddam was due in court Tuesday with seven co-defendants as their trial resumed for the killing of nearly 150 people from the town of Dujail after a 1982 assassination attempt there against the former Iraqi leader.

I think the main suspects are Shiites rather than al-Qaeda.
