UAE govt. Confiscate text books from American school

Dubai: The UAE government has confiscated over 100 copies of a social studies text book from an upscale American school in Abu Dhabi for allegedly portraying Islam in a negative light, as controversy over the Prophet Mohammad cartoons continued to rage across the Muslim world.

Copies of the book 'World Cultures', taught to sixth grade students at the school was confiscated by the Ministry of Education' yesterday for allegedly containing in certain chapters "a deluge of derogatory remarks against Islam and the Muslim world, for example dubbing Middle East as one of the most dangerous explosive areas in the world and the Muslim conquest of India as the most bloodiest in the world history," a report in the Khaleej Times said.

"Israel is one of a few democracies in north Africa and the Middle East today; the country of Syria has sponsored terrorism by giving aid to radicals in the Palestine Liberation Organisation", excerpts from the book read.

Terming the text as 'racist', Juma Salami, Assistant Undersecretary to Foreign Prtivate Education said the book, published by Silver Burdett Ginn, is insulting to the country's religion and culture.

"While there are clamour for change in the Middle East, one has to understand that these are the books coming from so called 'free world'. This is a typical example of how textbooks are used to manipulate the thought of young minds," Salami said.

The book would be withdrawn from the syllabus, he said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Education Haniff Hassan Al Qassimi said "a more rigorous monitoring system would be implemented to control the content being taught in the private schools."

The school should not have supplied racist textbooks.

Probably just upset that Iraq was left of that list.

Has no bearing on that, though textbooks used in wahabbi schools in the US is something we should look at.

This "Cultures" Book Is Bogus and Useless

Sara Thompson

Silver Burdett Ginn's World Cultures is a fake. Despite its title, it makes no effort to examine and compare cultures.

This book seems to have been cobbled together from pieces of old geography texts and world-history texts. It presents a whirlwind tour across continents and time, with only the most superficial glimpses at peoples or events. The West receives more elaborate treatment than do the other parts of the world -- but in the end, no peoples or historical periods stand out from the general blur.

World Cultures has a 1995 copyright, but it already is long out- of-date. In this book, Nelson Mandela has not yet become the head of state in South Africa. Japan is still enjoying its "economic miracle" of the 1980s. Cuba is in good condition, and "poverty has been largely eliminated"; apparently, the Soviet Union's aid to Cuba hasn't yet come to an end. But the Soviet Union itself apparently has come to an end and has changed into Russia. The Silver Burdett Ginn writers continually call Russia "the former Soviet Union," sometimes to hilarious effect (as we shall see).

Everything was better in the 90s.

Yo know, I heard that the guy on the grassy knoll was from the UAE and he was the same guy who was responsible for fluoride in water.

Before he died, he consulted with Halliburton on the hurricane machine that caused hurricane Katrina. He might have been responsible for the Roswell incident as well.

If you tell the truth about the lie that imprisons the members of a death cult, they will call you a racist.

I guess they have the moral high ground on this issue, right?
