(CBS) The latest CBS News poll finds President Bush's approval rating has fallen to an all-time low of 34 percent, while pessimism about the Iraq war has risen to a new high.
Americans are also overwhelmingly opposed to the Bush-backed deal giving a Dubai-owned company operational control over six major U.S. ports. Seven in 10 Americans, including 58 percent of Republicans, say they're opposed to the agreement.
CBS News senior White House correspondent Jim Axelrod reports that now it turns out the Coast Guard had concerns about the ports deal, a disclosure that is no doubt troubling to a president who assured Americans there was no security risk from the deal.
The troubling results for the Bush administration come amid reminders about the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina and negative assessments of how the government and the president have handled it for six months.
In a separate poll, two out of three Americans said they do not think President Bush has responded adequately to the needs of Katrina victims. Only 32 percent approve of the way President Bush is responding to those needs, a drop of 12 points from last Septembers poll, taken just two weeks after the storm made landfall.
Mr. Bush's overall job rating has fallen to 34 percent, down from 42 percent last month. Fifty-nine percent disapprove of the job the president is doing.
For the first time in this poll, most Americans say the president does not care much about people like themselves. Fifty-one percent now think he doesn't care, compared to 47 percent last fall.
Just 30 percent approve of how Mr. Bush is handling the Iraq war, another all-time low.
By two to one, the poll finds Americans think U.S. efforts to bring stability to Iraq are going badly the worst assessment yet of progress in Iraq.
Even on fighting terrorism, which has long been a strong suit for Mr. Bush, his ratings dropped lower than ever. Half of Americans say they disapprove of how he's handling the war on terror, while 43 percent approve.
In a bright spot for the administration, most Americans appeared to have heard enough about Vice President Dick Cheney's hunting accident.
More then three in four said it was understandable that the accident had occurred and two-thirds said the media had spent too much time covering the story.
Still, the incident appears to have made the public's already negative view of Cheney a more so. Just 18 percent said they had a favorable view of the vice president, down from 23 percent in January.
Americans were evenly split on whether or not Cheney's explanation of why there was a delay in reporting the accident was satisfactory.
Watch Bush speak sometime. It is mostly extemporaneous. He has a book with pages in plastic sleeves, I think. You can see himm flipping the pages. Watch him sometime. He is not an idiot. Are you?
You think the average citizen knows or thinks that? Do you think the average citizen is going to read these transcripts? They are more likely to get their news from Jay Leno.
There is a reason that Bush's ratings are in the tank, and it's not that the pollsters are lying cheats, it's that Bush hasnt been effective at communicating anything since he was re-elected. Its also true that he and his administration have bumbled from one disaster to another continually walking all over whatever they planned to be the story of the day.
Gee, do you think that maybe there is good reason for congress to be running like crazy from Bush. Maybe Bush is driving perceived alignment with the Republican party down.
Bush will never get into this back and forth warroom sewer. He's above it. Frankly, I think he should close the WH press room and go to an internet operation. There is no reason to put on that silly show every day.
I never said he was an idiot. I do think he's got the communications skills of a ten year old.
No ten year olds have ever been elected president.
As this thread now indicates, the press misreported what the Coast Guard said. Surprise, surprise. Wonder just how much else they've misreported or waved their "creative editing" wand over...
This entire issue was selectively reported from the git-go to ensure the hysterical response that initially arose.
Seasoned FReepers shouldn't fall for such tactics.
This whole ports issue is a manufactured story. Many foriegn countries own port facilities in the US and around the world I don't think the dems will be able to convert it into house or senate seats because they'll overplay thier hand and end up looking childish and petty. ( which they usually do )
Just my opinion
Rush started his show discussing the skewed sample in this poll.
great minds think alike... :-)
You are not seeing the gist of my comment.
I was for Miers...I thought the micromanagement by the Christian right and others over abortion exposed a seem in the coalition that the Dems and more importantly the Republican back stabbers would exploit for their own personal benifit.
They have and they continue to do so.
My angst is not against the president, it is aginst portions of the so called base that is blown all to hell.
Yeah, I have Warner as the likely winner at the present time. This port thing makes that much more likely.
As I said before, the only fix for this is unity, but it ain't gonna happen under the current emotional knee jerk festival.
I also agree with you on Santorum, and there will be a few others.
But the one thing I differ on is that we don't have the ability to elect a "no free trade, isolationist" and I don't want one.
We will lose the presidency because of the media created perceptions on the war. The fact that Bin Laden is alive and a number of other things that will certainly lead to a Dem, as long as it is not Hillary.
The only way it would change is if Hillary gets the nomination, which is why Rove will be trying to make that possible.
Funny how that works.....
What's even more bogus and very revealing is the high percentage of Democrats and Independents and the low number of Republicans who actually took part in the poll. The percentage isn't even representative of ADULTS in this country. This is even worse than DUmmies DUmmying up online polls.
At what point does Freepdom accept that Dubya has a popularity problem?
Does it have to be a Rasmussen poll? Or will that be dismissed, too?
What signs does Freepdom look for to accept that Dubya's popularity has tanked?
This poll has only 27% republican respondants. IOW, it's rigged.
Rasmussen tends to be on the mark a large majority of the time. I don't trust in-house media polls like this garbage CBS is trumpeting as a true picture of the American psyche.
Of course it's rigged. The internals just made the obvious even more obvious.
Certainly not this poll. This article merely points out the things the media has been completely focused on for the last 5 years. This article basically takes any headline in the last 5 years and places it all into one article
Iraq is a disaster: YEAH!
Hurricane Katrina is a disaster: YEAH!
Bush hates blacks: YEAH!
