CBS News Poll: Bush Ratings At All-Time Low
CBS News ^ | 2/27/2006 | CBS/AP

(CBS) The latest CBS News poll finds President Bush's approval rating has fallen to an all-time low of 34 percent, while pessimism about the Iraq war has risen to a new high.

Americans are also overwhelmingly opposed to the Bush-backed deal giving a Dubai-owned company operational control over six major U.S. ports. Seven in 10 Americans, including 58 percent of Republicans, say they're opposed to the agreement.

CBS News senior White House correspondent Jim Axelrod reports that now it turns out the Coast Guard had concerns about the ports deal, a disclosure that is no doubt troubling to a president who assured Americans there was no security risk from the deal.

The troubling results for the Bush administration come amid reminders about the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina and negative assessments of how the government and the president have handled it for six months.

In a separate poll, two out of three Americans said they do not think President Bush has responded adequately to the needs of Katrina victims. Only 32 percent approve of the way President Bush is responding to those needs, a drop of 12 points from last September’s poll, taken just two weeks after the storm made landfall.

Mr. Bush's overall job rating has fallen to 34 percent, down from 42 percent last month. Fifty-nine percent disapprove of the job the president is doing.

For the first time in this poll, most Americans say the president does not care much about people like themselves. Fifty-one percent now think he doesn't care, compared to 47 percent last fall.

Just 30 percent approve of how Mr. Bush is handling the Iraq war, another all-time low.

By two to one, the poll finds Americans think U.S. efforts to bring stability to Iraq are going badly – the worst assessment yet of progress in Iraq.

Even on fighting terrorism, which has long been a strong suit for Mr. Bush, his ratings dropped lower than ever. Half of Americans say they disapprove of how he's handling the war on terror, while 43 percent approve.

In a bright spot for the administration, most Americans appeared to have heard enough about Vice President Dick Cheney's hunting accident.

More then three in four said it was understandable that the accident had occurred and two-thirds said the media had spent too much time covering the story.

Still, the incident appears to have made the public's already negative view of Cheney a more so. Just 18 percent said they had a favorable view of the vice president, down from 23 percent in January.

Americans were evenly split on whether or not Cheney's explanation of why there was a delay in reporting the accident was satisfactory.

Before you get banned, know that over 80% of Republicans will trust him more than any other political leader in the country.

if you believe Iraq is going well

Of course Iraq isn't going well. It's a hell-hole. The MSM wants you to believe that it's therefore a mistake and a failure. It's going to take time and lot more shaking-up of the Middle East to solve the problem long-term.

When you spit in the eyes of an ally who gave us military bases and served us a lot in the war on terror, expect some consequences.

Since you haven't been here for long, I will have to take you at your word on that. But my fundamental question is...did you ever really trust him?

I will trust a man who does the right thing despite the hostile poll numbers far longer than I do a man who looks at polls and abruptly does an about face. The President is good with this. The people who know are good with this. So I am good with this too. International politics is a messy business, which is something I never forget when it comes to this.

So I will say it loud and clear. I still TRUST the President. AND I verified.

no because a lot of the insurgency is AQ and foreign based.

Saddam is the excuse, not the cause.....whether he lives or dies won't matter really one way or the other. If we allow the Iraqis to do things by the book, it will be an afterthought.

No, what the crux of what is going on in Iraq is, and has been, is that AQ is in a battle not only for whatever their cause is, but for influence in the region. And they have taken in right in the nuts there too. They've lost, but they still can make some noise from time to time.

The attacks are way down. They don't even directly take us on anymore. They DO attack Iraqis however. But that will stop as we get more Iraqi battalions on line.

It's a shame your posting history doesn't go back to a time when you did trust him. Every one of your posts is negative towards our party and our President. Why are you here?

Why are people so afraid of globalism? Makes no sense.

I'm not afraid of it. I just think it's a mistake to let the enemy have any degree of control over our ports. If UAE wants to buy our products, that's great. If they want to host our call centers, that's OK. But I don't think they should have any control over our vital infrastructure. I'm flabbergasted that conservatives think that's OK. Job number 1 is security.

"But by association it also hurts his brother's chances and Republicans that go along with him on this ports deal."

I doubt it but "you" can always hope.

This has NOT been a brutal winter, the poor and the indigent elderly GET CHEAP OR FREE FUEL. and nobody is being found frozen to death in their homes! What universe/dimensional plane do you live in?

Please try to rise above your normal standard of reading comprehension. Jveritas thinks the American people want war with Iran. I was sketching out what the consequences to the American people of that war will be when gas prices skyrocket on the futures market as the first bomb drops.

I know you are a bushbot but I am not going to dumb down my writing for your sake.

"That's entirely fair, but its Bush and the admin's job to make their case persuasively and cogently."

He tried to get the message out but the Democrats, MSM and those who hadn't done their own homework didn't want to listen. Instead they just spread their 'doom and gloom' lies. Since day one he's had to be on the defensive against these clowns. They've done everything imaginable to block his every move. I don't believe there's been another President that's hit such spiteful roadblocks at his every turn. The commie Democrats and commie MSM are petrified that he's going to go down in history as a popular, successful President but way down the road the truth will eventually come out.

As usual they hit hardest when he's not able to answer back and defend his decisions.

Regarding poll numbers: If a sample is adequately random, it doesn't matter what party they say they belong to.

Americans are clearly against this port deal. It's not even questionable.
