Slain couples' bodies return to Toronto

TORONTO (CP) - The bodies of a Canadian couple slain at a Mexican resort last week were expected back in Canada on Monday, one day after Mexican authorities said they had released the bodies to the family.

"We are aware, from what we know so far, that the bodies are coming in (Monday)," Nick Vescio, of Fratelli Vescio Funeral Homes in Woodbridge, Ont., told The Canadian Press.

Domenico Ianiero, 59, and his wife, Annunziata, 55, were found dead in their hotel room on Feb. 20 at a luxury resort near Cancun, their throats slashed.

They were in Mexico to attend their daughter's wedding.

The Ontario coroner's office was expected to take possession of the bodies upon their return to Canada before conducting a forensic investigation.

The case has taken a number of strange twists in the last week, with Mexican authorities releasing various pieces of conflicting information about the suspects, who they continue to insist are three Canadian women no longer in Mexico.

Authorities originally characterized the killings as the work of a professional, fuelling speculation about a possible link to organized crime.

The attorney general for the state of Quintana Roo, which includes Cancun, later recanted that theory, saying he didn't think that was the case.

Almost from the outset, Mexican investigators have insisted the suspects were from Canada and had fled Mexico. Two women from Thunder Bay, Ont., who feared they were inadvertently named as suspects have already reported to police at home to clear their names.

Since then, a number of critics have wondered aloud whether the Mexican investigation has been rushed to avoid giving the popular tourist destination a black eye.

An RCMP liaison officer has been in touch with the family, Canadian authorities said.

It wasn't until Saturday - six days after the bodies were found - that police in Canada said they had been asked to join the investigation.

So the Mexican "investigators" are claiming that some foreigners did the deed and then skipped back to their home country? Geez, talk about projection.

I would never vacation in Mexico. They won't get 1 tourism dollar from me.

a couple I know has been going to a spot in Mexico periodically since the late 70s. Their most recent trip was their last. What was once a quaint place with good shopping has become a very sleazy enterprise.
They used to buy leather goods, nick-knacks, etc.
This most recent trip they were offered drugs/prostitutes a half dozen times in the first few days. And these are Old Folks not young hipsters! It was much dirtier and very un-safe feeling outside of the touristy enclaves.

A general sleaziness has taken over the former quaint and cheerful area.
They described Mexico today as it as a Dangerous Ghetto meets Disney meets Columbian Drug lords....hehe

"Foreignors don't care about us..."

In fairness it must be said that in Mexico they don't care about murdered Mexicans either. I'm amazed they caught the two serial killers, one of the old ladies and the other of the gay guys. I don't even think they knew the gays were being killed by a serial killer until the guy confessed, and vowed to kill again.

this just keeps getting weirder and weirder i think.i wonder if the truth will ever come out? i really do think they were involved in something they shouldn't be though. it would be nice to know a little more about their background.

"i really do think they were involved in something they shouldn't be though. it would be nice to know a little more about their background.>>>>> Their throats were slashed and a trail of blood was in the hotel hallway leading from the victims room to another room, about 10 rooms away.

It doesn't look like a professional hit, but perhaps an attempted robbery or drug deal that went bad, perhaps they walked in on the robbers

What evidence we have points to Mexicans doing it, and perhaps with the cooperation of a hotel staff employee. No professional killer would leave a blood trail in the hallway, because that would effect his or her ability to escape undiscovered for a few hours. Thats my theory for what it is worth, not much.

The fact that Mexicans were involved here explains why the police are clamming up AND the result will still be that Spring Break for Canadian College students in Cancun is finished. Mexico bites the big one here OR they catch the murderers and still bite the big one.

The Yucatan area is about to see a reduction in its tourist income, and the more the Mexican cops prevaricate, the worse it will be.

The Yucatan area (especially Cancun) is still trying to get back on its feet after the recent hurricane season. More reason to believe the real killer was a local, not three treacherous female throat-slitting Canadian contract killers (as the Mexican authorities would have had us believe).

My husband announced the other day that Mexico is the one place that he never wants to go. I used to have the opposite view, but the more I find out about Mexico-the more I agree.
