The late President Reagan was renowned for espousing Republican unity, so much so that he all but convinced the party faithful that Thou Shall Not Speak Ill of Another Republican was the 11th Commandment.
But as officials made nice at the weekend state Republican Party convention and invoked Reagan's name to persuade delegates to rally around Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Gipper would have been shocked by the mysterious buttons left around the Fairmont Hotel and the fliers slipped under delegates' doors in the dead of night.
"Where's he taking us? Why are we following?" read one button. Leaflets matched a handful of other Republican officeholders, including state Sen. Abel Maldonado, R-Santa Maria, who is carrying Schwarzenegger's legislation to raise the minimum wage, with photos of U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy and other hated Democrats.
And one particularly searing flier put together by the California Young Americans for Freedom superimposed the face of Schwarzenegger on the famous 1974 photo of hostage Patty Hearst holding a machine gun in front of the banner of the Symbionese Liberation Army.
It claimed the governor was brainwashed by his Democratic captors and is showing psychological effects known as the Stockholm Syndrome. "The captive will go so far as to take up arms to advance the agenda of his kidnappers," it said.
