Word out of the Defense Intelligence Agency and law enforcement sources has the FBI and the Department of Justice comparing notes and dates on who in the U.S. Senate received national security briefings on both the overseas terrorist prisons and the NSA overseas terrorist monitoring programs, and when those briefings took place.
"The number of Senators who received briefings is not as large as people think," says one law enforcement source. "These were programs with a limited 'Need to Know" list on Capitol Hill."
Federal investigators looking into the leaks of both those programs to the press are zeroing in on the Senate, and are expected to continue to hold interviews of both Senators and their senior staff in the coming days. "This investigation is moving forward at a pretty fast clip," says the law enforcement source. "We're not looking at a two-year probe. We're talking about moving fast."
As yet, cooperation from the media outlets -- the Washington Post and the New York Times has been minimal, but investigators aren't sure they will need full cooperation to make the case. "The Hill may be all we need," says the source.
Focus of the investigation remains on the staffs of two Senators, Sen. Jay Rockefeller and Sen. Dick Durbin, as well as committee staff for the Senate Intelligence Committee and career intelligence staff detailed to U.S. Senate offices and committees. Last week, it was revealed that on February 17 Senator Rockefeller had sent a letter to the White House claiming that the Bush Administration had illegally leaked classified materials to Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward for a book project he was working on with cooperation from the Bush White House.
A number of people of Capitol Hill and in the intelligence community interpreted the letter as an attempt by Rockefeller to play defense should it be revealed that his office or staff tied to him on the Intelligence Committee are somehow involved in the serious leak cases.
I am afraid that you are correct. It seems that the GOP, as one example, does not have that 'killer' instinct that the lefty Dems have to finish off an enemy opponent. The Gop in fact thinks that the lefty Senators are really their buddies with varied views as to how the nation should go but are just good ole boys who are patriots. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The left is a danger to our nation. Even Justice or the CIA will not be able to nail these Senators or their staffs. Now Pub offenders, they would be turned inside out and the media would have a field day. No MSM outlet will pursue any Dem outrage or scandal unless it is dragged kicking and screaming.
BTTT!
BUMP!!
Thanks! :-)
I suggest the Senators read them.
Nothing will come of this. The Administration would rather play nice than make the traitorous Dem Senators angry.
(next is a response to the rest of the thread--which I have read) I was a newbie once and don't begrudge them their right to voice opinions, but it's best to keep your hands still and read many threads. One can learn who is respected around here and save him or herself from looking like an idiot by trying to flame the most reasonable folks who visit this site. THAT doesn't go over too well with us silent ones who look to folks like you to voice our opinions and bring in some sanity.
Thanks! I remember when I signed up here from Town Hall. I didn't know how to post an article and got one of the Freepers to post Sen Inhofe's Theft of Nuclear Secrets speech on the floor of the Senate. I had lurked before I signed up and was almost afraid to post against something someone said. I didn't get in any flame wars for a long time. Now new people say some of the most negative things. Some of these people need a lesson in manners in addition to Government 101! :)
This tactic tries to take to the offensive in order to evade an attack on oneself. Rockefeller knows the writing is on the wall. He would not resort to such tactics if he knew he was innocent.
Thank you PhiKapMom!
You said it well....2 cents and all:)
I have lurked here since the early 90's from a link off Drudge. Those were good days, like a big family here. Very little bickering, just a united group of good people.
Used to be a good FR IRC chat room also, with some great folks. Never see hardly any of them on here anymore.
Ha!!! I actually posted on another thread a couple of weeks ago about manners (I rarely post but do read everyday). Should parents or teachers teach manners...I opted for parents first, being both a parent AND a teacher. I suppose it may be a little late for some of these folks to learn from their parents?:)?:) Who gets the job now????
****
They closed in.
Durbin, Rockefeller and Wyden received criminal referrals today...leak probe

Sweet.
Lady, don't you worry your heart about "offending" someone on this site - as long as you have your 'ducks in a row' on the story, that's all that matters :)
AMEN!
That is sweet!
Didn't hear that however. Put a little spark in my morning tho. ; )
Well, I think the vicious attacks on anyone who disagrees with the Bush Admin on any given issue are even worse.
So both sides need to chill out.
;-)
Yeah, we can hope, but after years of watching this self-serving "you wash my back, I'll wash yours" cesspool of morality called Congress, I'm not holding my breath to be honest.
Me neither. I'm not expecting the right thing to happen.
