DAUGHTER OF ISLAM An eloquent(and elegant)foe of Muslim fundamentalists
WSJ ^ | Saturday 25 February 2006 | Nancy de Wolf Smith

WASHINGTON-- Yenny Wahid has a smile that could melt a Hershey bar at 100 yards. Her sunny disposition is all the more remarkable because Ms. Wahid is on what may be the world's most difficult mission right now. She's a prominent Muslim (and a woman at that) who speaks out against terror and the hijacking of her religion by ideologues who twist it to their own political ends. After 9/11, many Americans assumed that the radical Islamic adjenda is to destroy the U.S. The reality is that attacks on Western targets are designed to function as brutal propaganda coups that will attract recruits to the cause of violent revolution. The main goal of ideologues like Osama Bin Laden is to topple the governments of MUSLIM countries, including most famously, the Wahabi royal regime of Saudia Arabia. But the real strategic plum, Ms. Wahid says, would be her native Indonesia and its 220 million citizens -- with the largest Muslin population on Earth...."We are the ultimate target," she told me in Washington during a trip to the U.S. earlier this month. "The real battle for the hearts and minds of Muslims is happening in Indonesia, not anywhere else. And that's why the world should focus on Indonesia and help". Think of it as a potential domino whose fall would be felt far beyond Asia. "It's big enough to destabilize the region", Ms. Wahid notes. But "imagine if Indonesia became a hotbed for terrorism, or a source for people to get martyrs from. We've got enough people to provide an army of terrorists if we're not careful".

I know it may sound exceptionally dense to say this, but while reading the article, I REALLY wanted to believe her. I mean, come on, a 100yd Hershey melting smile and a SUNNY disposition? Who wouldn't want that to be the first thought that comes to mind when you hear Muslim?

Thank G-d you posted those pictures. Jeezzz, what a snake in the grass.

The problem is, how many Indonesian Muslims listen to her (or her father, for that matter)? In any case, it'll do good if more like her comes out and condemn 9/11 without any 'but...'

Also, the face of Islam in Indonesia is changing. Day by day, more and more laws or regulations established that are based on Islamic views. To build a church for instance, you need a permission from the local Islamic leaders. Otherwise they'll burn your church and nobody comes to help. Or, a new bill introduced recently that would forbid anybody to kiss in public... Or, the education law, which force the pupil to get educated according to his/her religion, regardless where s/he goes to school. So, Catholic school, for instance, have to provide Islamic courses for Muslim students... (and, indeed, there are many Muslim students in Christian schools).

"how many Indonesian Muslims listen to her "

I believe the article said that the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) has 40 million members.

Abdul-Rahman Wahid, apparently is this young woman's father. He is a wonderful man, who is kind and benign. Maybe too benign for his own good. He was too accommodating and soft to be an effective President of Indonesia.

But he seems to have brought up his daughter well, and she seems not to have fallen far from the tree.

The pictures that somebody gratuitously posted have NOTHING to do with Yenny Wahid or her father. Or with Indonesia, for that matter.

I wonder just who is the "snake in the grass" with this kind of comment.

Why does almost every article about Islam, even the President's SOTU speech, qualify itself by saying a great religion has been "hijacked"?

IMHO, it must have been "hijacked" about 1400 years ago, so are we seriously expecting it to "unjack" itself at some point?

Remember! Islam is one of the world's great religions with some very beautiful traditions and celebrations. Take for example, the famous "Ashoura" celebrated by Shiite Muslims around the world.

Ashoura is a very sweet and quaint Islamic tradition whereby people cut bloody gashes in their heads and bleed profusely over themselves while they work themselves up into a screaming, shouting religious frenzy.

Other young men will beat themselves bloody with chains, knives, swords, whips... etc.

It's a very - ahem - 'colorful' tradition.

Fine.
Then go take a look at this site. This is mostly posted by a Christian who actually lives in Indonesia. Then tell me that I am the snake in the grass.

One has to wonder what it will take for people to wake up.

The problem with Islam is NOT that it has been twisted or hijacked.

The problem with Islam is Islam.

"I wonder just who is the "snake in the grass" with this kind of comment.:

That would be Islam.

"But he seems to have brought up his daughter well, and she seems not to have fallen far from the tree. The pictures that somebody gratuitously posted have NOTHING to do with Yenny Wahid or her father. Or with Indonesia, for that matter. " I'm sure she hasn't fallen far from tree, and she seems quite personable. HOWEVER, to say that the pictures hve nothing to do with this Islamic family is misdirection. They are muslim and those are Islamic observances .

The Wahid family sound very accomplished and polished and have a good sounding message. However, isn't it okay for Muslims to lie to infidels?

But they do, because Ms.Wahid is a spokesman. It's always a good idea to keep the other face of this doctrine in mind.

I was trying to explain to my daughter why we must never trust them:
"They're monotheistic and acknowledge many of the prophets of the bible" she said.
"but not the Ten Commandmants " I replied.

I wasn't certain of this and googled it up and found there was one oblique reference in one of the surahs. There may be others but I found no reference and I turned up no discussion of this from any muslim apologists.

I'll admit I'm over my head in this, but I think this needs exploration. I think its strong ground.

Since they believe that all "messages" from "god" before the Koran became corrupted they do not specifically accept anything from the Bible or the Torah including the Ten Commandments.

Not all NU members listen to her father, let alone to her. NU is an Islamic organization whose members usually listen to their leaders, but it's not solid either. In the election, the Awakening Party (NU's political wing) gathered much lower number than its supposed members.

I was going to make a poster out of images from Indonesia, but they are far too horrific to actually post here. Go and see the site I've linked to.

They make the photos I've posted above look like child's play.

THIS LINK IS DISTURBING: Do not click it if you are easily upset by images of violent muslims.
