The End of Tolerance

The End of Tolerance Farewell, multiculturalism. A cartoon backlash is pushing Europe to insist upon its values. By Stefan Theil Newsweek International

March 6, 2006 issue - The world has long looked upon the Dutch as the very model of a modern, multicultural society. Open and liberal, the tiny seagoing nation that invented the globalized economy in the 1600s prided itself on a history of taking in all comers, be they Indonesian or Turkish, African or Chinese.

How different things look today. Dutch borders have been virtually shut. New immigration is down to a trickle. The great cosmopolitan port city of Rotterdam just published a code of conduct requiring Dutch be spoken in public. Parliament recently legislated a countrywide ban on wearing the burqa in public. And listen to a prominent Dutch establishment figure describe the new Dutch Way with immigrants. "We demand a new social contract," says Jan Wolter Wabeke, High Court Judge in The Hague. "We no longer accept that people don't learn our language, we require that they send their daughters to school, and we demand they stop bringing in young brides from the desert and locking them up in third-floor apartments."

What's going on here? Weren't the Dutch supposed to be the nicest people on earth, the most tolerant nation in Europe, a melting pot for minorities and immigrants since the Renaissance? No longer, and in this the Dutch are once again at the forefront of changes in Europe. This time, the Dutch model for Europe is one of multiculturalism besieged, if not plain defunct.

The word credit goes back to Sir Winston Churchill, who in 1926, IIRC, spoke of "foul baboonery of bolshevism". Since he was a 9th degree black belt in English language, his usage of the word necessarily means that it must be a good one. Besides, it is highly appropriate.

The first image to appear in my mind when I heard the word "baboonery" is MTV.

In general, Mexicans seem more capable of adapting to American culture. If you look at states like New Mexico, hispanics have been here a hell of a lot longer than anglos...and many can trace their families back to this state longer than America (the country) has existed. Their culture is American. We are a diverse country and always have been.

Back in the 70's or 80's, the Dutch responded to the "Red Guard" pretty much the same way..

While other european nations were paying ransoms and having their airports and bus stations bombed, and civilians shot, the Dutch took another tack..

They mobilized the Police and military, and killed the little communist revolutionary bastards..

The Red Guard left the Netherlands and never tried to bother the Dutch again..
They decided it was safer to terrorize Italians..

YOu are not allowed to mention those things. You know full well you are only allowed to mention pillaging if white men did it. I have been highly amused at the ongoing revision of history regarding our islamic friends. And of course, no one in power would dare tell the historical truth, God forbid. Now on to Europe, ahah, they are not awake, they merely put the pillow over their heads. Europe will do nothing to correct this situation, nothing at all.

Most mosques, by contrast, are hidden in converted shops or tenement apartments.

Maybe most of them are hidden...but there is a big honking one down the road from me. It looks like it could house an ICBM!

Copied from catattack: I used to think that there were only a few "bad apples" in the Muslim world. But as I watch the news and see that everyday there is some new Muslim riot in EVERY muslim country against the Jews or the West, with thousands and thousands of muslims protesting and rioting, burning our flags and our embassies, throwing eggs at Christian churches, killing an Italian priest in Turkey, chopping off the heads of their kidnapped victims, vowing to kill anyone who offends their god, murdering the nephew of Vincent Van Gogh, French muslims kidnapping, torturing for 20 days and then killing a Jewish youth in Paris, thousands of cars destoryed in Paris muslim riots, muslims boycotting Demark products, muslim leaders denying the Holocoust while seeking to destroy Israel, Iran building nuclear weapons to use against Israel and the west if we get in their way. Palestians (aka Arabs)voting for a terrorist government which vows to destroy Israel. Not to mention the attacks on 9/11 by muslims!!!! YET, I never hear from the moderate muslims. Where are they? From my observations, they don't exist. They are all against us whether they riot or stay at home. American muslims pretend to like Americans/America. But don't be fooled. If they aren't rioting or protesting on the streets, they are at home celebrating the attack on the twin towers. Remember when Europeans came to America in the 1800's and 1900's? They all changed their names to American names - a Russian Nickolas, became Nick, an Italian Giovani, became George. I have never heard of a muslim Mohammed becoming Mike have you???? Wake up America and Europe!!!

they are still well and truly pissed off that Ferdinand and Isabella drove them out of Andalusia five hundred years ago. That seems to be one of Osama's particular bugbears.

The Spanish should make some commerative holiday out of that event and have OBL bouncing off his cave walls.

The American public has bitterly complained about immigration for decades, it hasn't meant a thing.

In the not too distant future, there will be a Mexican "March on Washington" similar to the '60s and it will shock the general public (Except West Coasters). It will also shock the pols into doing all the wrong things.

However, that's for my kids to worry about.

The Dutch have made the required first move: stopping immigration. All of Europe must do this, and we must do it also. Just STOP IT NOW.

Now if only the U.S. would understand this in regard to the Mexican illegals.

There is no such thing as mexicans - only potential "new Americans".

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

You can read the speech here.

Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:

In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. After decades of relatively unfettered immigration and cultural laissez faire when it came to accepting people of differing values and social mores, there are signs that a potentially ugly backlash is setting in.

Note how it is the fault of the Ugly Europeans in creating this "backlash." Newsweek continues to lead in Marxist drivel.

"There is something very close to a sea change in public opinion on the other side of the pond. Anti-Americanism is no longer in style. And Europeans are no longer ready to buy the line that Islam is just another peaceful and misunderstood religion."

I agree being half French (dont hold that against me :-) I have heard form friends and family concerning this issue. It is amazing concerning the change of tone and opinion within just a couple of weeks. Those holding to to their left wing opinions concerning needing to "understand" and "tolerate" Islam (the usual Chamberlain stuff) are now doing an about face I just have to keep nodding and biting my tongue .....
