"And the corporations that are promoting these products are extremely powerful in the food system."

Oh-h-h. The System. That's a nice trick, tyring to come off anti-establishment. This anti-fat food movement is driven by the elites, nothing more. What a phoney way of appealing to the yokels.

If these people want us to lose weight, through healthier eating, I suggest forcing women to stay at home. Back when most homes had two parent families and a stay at home wife, they family's diet could be controlled by her.

Now that we are entering the brave new world, we are much more on our own, dietarity speaking. Thank goodness big brother is there to step in and tell us how to eat properly.

He suggested the tax revenues could be put into promoting healthy eating.

Media loves this. 90% of the ad space on Canadian television is used for promoting some government agenda, be it anti smoking, eating, driving habits, social issues, etc. All paid for by the taxpayers.

Keep drinking. The problem is the government involvment in healthcare. Give people their money and let them provide their own healthcare. Free markets rule!

Like I said.....None of your business if you are not paying my bills.

What's next? Suing grocers for selling high-fat high-sugar foods? Makes about as much sense as suing a bartender because a customer got drunk. Zip.

Geesh!

You don't eat now?

Or you don't eat tasty and satiating foods?

We need a punitive tax on Piled High and Deeper types that attempt to "fix" things that people don't want or need "fixed".

Apparently there are relatively high return on investment with the "junk food" products, as compared to more nutritionally complete foods. Sugar and most fats are comparatively lower in cost per calorie than proteins or most complex carbohydrates.

"Destroy all sugar mills!"

Ah, but the growing proportion of sweetners is being shifted to corn syrup, also as a cost measure. Sugar, either beet or cane, is too expensive to use in many applications.

It is purely a profit margin thing.

Alright, if you're willing to allow insurance providers to determine rates based upon your health status, go right ahead with that idea.

Just realize that the way things are set up now, the obese are essentially a tax on the rest of us. The guy who is at 9% bodyfat is paying the same premiums as the guy at 25%. Guess who is going to be paying costing the system more 9 times out of 10.

So then who determines what is non-junk food and food that is high in nutrition?

Good point. Last night I drank a container of chocolate milk. Most health food fanatics would consider it "unhealthy" because of its fat content, but for under 400 calories I got 27% of my daily protein needs filled plus a lot of vitamins, AND it tasted delicious.

High fructose corn syrup. Otherwise known as tooth-rotting garbage that doesn't even make you full.

Since you are fat, your health problems are paid for by the communists taxpayer, so they have every right to tell you what to eat, and force you to get some excersize.

Understood. One reason why I would never live in Canada or any other socialist/communist/fascist place.

The problem is the "nanny staters" that are trying to turn my beloved country into a socialist/communist/fascist hell hole. This is why the push for "nationalized health care" here in the states. It MUST be fought on all fronts.

Or a 100% tax on Starbucks' coffee, and on organically grown food. Why not gore their oxes?

What? No Double Stuff Oreos to go with? LOL! :)

My DH is a chocolate milk lover. Skinny as a rail too, darn him!

"Obesity=lack of self control and discipline for 99.8% of the population."

Yeah, but 100% of that sub-set still claim it's genetic!

It may take a special tax to help fight what one Canadian sociologist calls the "obesogenic food environment" - the junk food that's prominently displayed in supermarkets and schools. These machines must be next to the "FreeCondomMachines"...right?

That's the beauty of the Socialist control system.

Step 1: Some people can't afford the medical help they need. We need to provide universal healthcare!

Step 2: Hey, now that everyone's covered by universal heathcare, we all pay everyone's insurance. Since everyone's health affects the bottom line of the government budget, we now have to control your choices because they cost the government money.

Step 3: You are now property of the state, and the state can dictate what you do with your body since it costs society money. (whatever happened to pro-choice?)

Sadly, most folks don't take this deal with the devil in consideration when they clamor for "universal healthcare". How does it feel to be no better than cattle now?

AIDS is a tax on the rest of us.

ALCHOLISM is a tax on the rest of us.

WELFARE recipients are a tax on the rest of us.

DRUG ADDICTS are a tax on the rest of us.

I hate the food police. These always seem to be the people screaming "choice" on the abortion issue as well.
