It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Darren McGavin at approximately 7:10 A.M. Pacific time today, Saturday 25, 2006. Darren was just three months short of his 84th birthday. While we suspect none of us can imagine a world without the beloved, feisty little red-head, it is time to reflect, give thanks for his life and hold in reverence his memory. Darren is gone, but in many respects he will always be with us: as Carl Kolchak, fighting authority and battling monsters; the grumpy Old Man sending curses over Lake Michigan; as David Ross, the outsider, Grey Holden, captain of the Enterprise, the irascible detective Mike Hammer or any number of memorable guest star appearances, most notably as Joe Bascome on GUNSMOKE and as the washed-up old actor from "Distant Signals."
Please take a moment in your sadness to reflect upon all the ways Darren touched your lives, say a prayer and raise a glass to toast a career which spanned over fifty years and affected us all in ways too numerous to count.
"It's a major award!"
Pick it up, it's not too expensive.
But all he got out was:
"Shalla FLINGa!"
ping
"Fif-ty thousand bucks"
Another terrible loss.
You will be missed -
Ralphie's dad died...:-(
Riverboat was my first memory of Darren McGavin, too! Loved that series.
And of course, Ralphie's dad. Besides the "fraj-eelay" leg lamp, I think also of the wonderful cuss words when he went to fix the furnace!!
First Mr. Limpet and now the Night Stalker...Two more greats have left us today :-(
The best touch in the movie to me was toning down the cursing with the use of McGavin uttering or yelling nonsense words. It was so meaningful to me because my dad had the same habit of uttering nonsense phrases instead of using the explicit words all us kids knew by 11.

Rest in peace.
My dad was kind of like that...mom did not like his swearing, so when he mumbled under his breath, we indeed, did know what he meant, and we also knew that we were never to use those words around the house...
I can still taste the soap in my mouth, the first time I swore in the house...first and last time that is...(my mom , like the mom in the movie, wondered where in the world her 'angelic' children learned all those swear words)...God Bless our Moms and Dads...
Oh my gosh, I've seen A Christmas Story so many times that I feel like I have lost a family member. This is very sad.
Between the Night Stalker and "A Christmas Story," Darren McGavin will always be remembered...
RIP

Darren McGavin. One of my parents' favorites. Sweet memories of watching him with them.
RIP Mr. McGavin
Millennium? Are you talking about that awful Kris Kristopherson / Cheryl (the heavenly one) Ladd movie? What part did he play?

Even the Bumpus Hounds are sad today.
Funny that you mentioned him. Just the other day, I saw "Infinity" with Mathew Broaderick and Patricia Arquette, which was actually a rather interesting movie.

Anyone remember Don Knotts in The Ghost and Mr. Chicken?
I've gone to other media outlets, and haven't seen any mention of McGavin's passing, except for here on FR. You'd think it would be a bigger story.
