It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Darren McGavin at approximately 7:10 A.M. Pacific time today, Saturday 25, 2006. Darren was just three months short of his 84th birthday. While we suspect none of us can imagine a world without the beloved, feisty little red-head, it is time to reflect, give thanks for his life and hold in reverence his memory. Darren is gone, but in many respects he will always be with us: as Carl Kolchak, fighting authority and battling monsters; the grumpy Old Man sending curses over Lake Michigan; as David Ross, the outsider, Grey Holden, captain of the Enterprise, the irascible detective Mike Hammer or any number of memorable guest star appearances, most notably as Joe Bascome on GUNSMOKE and as the washed-up old actor from "Distant Signals."
Please take a moment in your sadness to reflect upon all the ways Darren touched your lives, say a prayer and raise a glass to toast a career which spanned over fifty years and affected us all in ways too numerous to count.

Hmmm... did I miss something? When did Don Knots die? I was in Vietnam last week so maybe this happened then?
I agree completely.
He was superb in that movie. One of the funniest movies. I especially liked the scene where he brings out the leg lamp. Makes me giggle everytime.

This year on AMC, they had the whole "young" cast of "A Christmas Story" 20 years later. It was hysterical. The kid that played Ralphie, Peter Billingsley, is recognized everywher he goes. He told a story about a family that comes to a Chinese Restaurant each Christmas Day and does the entire movie from memory. It is sort of their way of celebrating Christmas. The guy who played Scott Farkus, the bully, still looks like a rat with yellow teeth even though he is in his 40s.
I like the line about his dad being "an Oldsmobile man."

The first movie I saw him in. He made an indelible impression.
Historically, every time two people have died, someone else dies sometime later. It's uncanny.

I wouldn't cry for Jimmeh...LOL. But what I look forward to most with his passing will be the lamestream media's attempts to spin him a legacy. He's got NOTHING, just like comrade clintooon.
RIP Darrin McGavin and Don Knotts, two fine men, two fine actors.
Isn't that the truth. There is so much trash on TV that I watch Animal Planet, Game Show Channel and Hallmark most of the time. There just are not many good actors around anymore.

It's true, I suppose that we have created a museum of ghosts, made them fast and durable friends and invite them in when we get bored or lonely.

Long after Brad Pitt and Matt Damon are forgotten, McGavin's stuff will still be watched.

O how sad! At least he lived a long;full life. My Fave role of his was the Dad to Ralphie in "A Christmas Story." But every role I saw him in he did well at it.

So true! Recently I went looking for my old tv tapes of the show, found a bunch of them unplayable, I was so ticked. Saved them for the kids, and now my last is old enough to enjoy them. Hopefully they'll be on dvd.
He was some actor, really pulled you into it, yet he didn't go over the delicate line, and with a character like Kolchak that can't have been easy. Preposterous story lines, yet he made them gripping.
RIP, old fellow, and thank you for the good times.
